My car is running really rough right now. It has a rough idle, then engine shakes a little bit, sounds like it's backfiring, then it will die out within a minute or two. I just recently changed the spark plugs and wires but that did not solve the problem. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing my car to do this?

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.

Check the ignition control module. Sounds like the exact same problem I have had with mine. Took it to the dealership and the were able to tell me right away. The ignition control module is very easy to replace and is located on the top of the valve cover. Hope this helps!

What engine? You need to have it scanned for codes. Autozone will do this for free

Does it have the 2.3l Quad 4 engine? If so replace the plastic piece that the coils go into, they go bad and leak spark to the cam towers and then you get a nice one or multiple cylinder misfire.

Ok, so I ended up changing a bad ignition coil, but now I believe my alternator is bad because the battery won't keep a charge. and now I have no way of getting it to any shops to run diagnostics.
