1984 Volvo DL Wagon No Heat or Fan

I have a 1984 Volvo DL wagon and, among other issues, my heater, AC, and defrost do absolutely nothing. No hot air, no cold air, nada. No fan blowing either. Does this mean I need to replace the blower motor, or do I need to replace the heater core? Or both? Or something else entirely?

Have you inspected the fuses?

If the fuses are fine, check the wiring to the fan resistor has power in and out.

You could run a test wire with power to the fan and test operation independently, (make sure it has a fuse in test wire).

Its either the fuse, the fan motor or a wiring fault, (eg rats have chewed it).

SOURCE: Replace Heater Core for Volvo S70 (1999)

It is your heater core. I fixed mine for $144. Ordered the new part on Ebay and followed these instructions http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=9717 It was very simple, I'm a middle age grandmother! The hardest part was cleaning up all the antifreeze. You will need a shopvac, a small one is $20 at WalMart.

SOURCE: Cost and how to repair a heater core on a 1994 Volvo 850 Wagon.

The heater core on your Volvo is an easy fix. The dash does not need to come out. You remove 6 screws from the center console, pull that out of the way, pull back the carpet and there she is. A couple more screws, a tug to the back to remove the bad core and you replace in reverse. Put down a plastic bag or catch-can to get whatever coolant comes out when the core is removed. I thought I was in for an expensive repair until I researched and saw how easy the job was.

SOURCE: starting a 1984 240 DL Volvo wagon after sitting in a garage for 5 years

Replace engine oil and filter, air filter and fuel filter.
Drain the fuel tank and add fresh fuel.
Remove the spark plugs and put a squirt of oil in each cylinder. Remove coil lead and crank engine until oil pressure comes up.(light goes out),
replace coil lead and start engine.. it will blow smoke for first few minutes. Check trans fluid, brake fluid etc before driving. Theres a good chance the brakes will need an overhaul.

You need to check your engine wiring harness. 84 is part of the crumbling, corroding wiring insulation years. If your harness has not been replaced, you may have to really scrounge around to find one of the "new" versions that has okay insulation on the wiring.
