1988 Chevy Blazer Heater Core Replacement

I'm getting ready to (within the week) replace a heater core on an 88 S10 model blazer (2.8). I know how the heater core works, basically where it is located and the rough steps to remove and replace it. Is there anything special I should know or any specialty tools that I will need to get it out?
I have had auto mechanics class and quite a bit of experience fixing vehicles, but have never done a heater core. I'm pretty confident that I can get it done, but would like to know of any unexpected problems I might encounter.  I need a schematic on removal and replacement for my 1998 chevrolet blazer 4.3 heater core. Do you know where I can find the schematcs?

First determine if the heater core is located high or low by raising the hood checking against the firewall {by following the heater hoses to the fire wall} if it is high need to remove the dash. if it is low get on your back and start removing clips and screws no special tool needed.

How to get to the heater core in my 1988 chevy s10

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Where is the heater contol valve on a 1998 chevy s10 blazer. i get very little heat

There isn't one. There is always coolant flowing through the heater core. The blend door controls all of the heating and airconditioning.
Make sure the heater core is free flowing, most of the time the core gets plugged with rust and slug and does not allow coolant to flow through. You can take the hoses off the core and try and back flush it with a gardan hose.
