1999 Renault Megane 1.4 16 valve. Exact same problems as above. Was it your timing belt and, if so, was there any damage done to the valves?

Hit the same problem yesterday with my 99 Laguna. Having talked to 4 mechanics, 2 solutions

    1. Get the mechanic open up the Cylinder and the engine, try checkin the cam belt, timing belts and valves and see what needs replacement. Now the estimation i got for this check is £200 + VAT. If you are lucky you might get it cheaper. Once some or all of those parts need replacement, this hikes the fees to anything upto £1000

    2. Get an used engine. Prices vary from £250 to £500 plus engine refit labour of around £100.

I am thinking of the second option. I did manage to get a few quotes from some sites. Planning to do the Engine Code match tomorrow before buying this.

What is the brown sludge in my water coolant and why has my engine lost power on my 05 Renault megane coupe cabriolet

Sludge is engine oil. Add lost power and = you have blown head gasket or cracked head. Sorry to convey such bad news.

it looks like u have bad spark plugs, mainly when the car is cold .this noise seems to be backfire coming thru air fllter casing or the accessory belts. also check your engine oil quality-replace if necessary

My Renault megane 2003 began juddering on the motorway doing around 70mph then the engine management light kept flicking on and off. I pulled over stop the engine turned all electrics off and restarted it,...

Check the timing belt. It should have been changed at 60,000 miles. Sounds like you have lost some teeth on the synchronous belt resulting in lost timing. Damage to valves can occur. look under plastic cover on the end of the head for the belt
