Was running good. Passed someone one on the highway (dropped down into passing gear) and now idles rough in Park/Neutral, and while in drive/reverse. Already had the famous rough idle and stall problem a couple of years ago(the air idle mixture valve was carboned over) Appears to be missing on a cylinder.
Is the check engine light on ?
Have you checked the computer for trouble codes ?
You could have one bad spark plug even with only 30k on it.
Problem could also be a dirty injector.
SOURCE: 1997 Ford Contour with a rough idle while stopped
This is a common complaint on these cars. I own a 96 myself.
Assuming that you engine is fine and runs smoothly under normal operation, and just is rough "feeling" at idle while stopped; then I would suggest changing the motor mounts...the mounts may not be broken, but the rubber isolators get worn and soft, and transffer normal engine vibration into the chasis of the vehicle. Mine was doing the same after changing the mounts good as new again.
Please note...don't use cheap mounts, by the better grade/quality mounts.

SOURCE: Ford Taurus: rough idle in drive and reverse
it could be that the tick over is two slow in brive,,,
set it up to tickover at 850,,950 rpm (in drive)
or it could be a gear box fult like the drive plate has a crack in it,,,letting the torque converter slap about,,,
chech tick over first,,, bont adjust tick over in gear unless the brakes are held hard on,,,

I have already checked the compression on passenger side plugs, checked plugs (only 30000 miles on them) and inspected plug lines (also 30000 miles on them). This vehicle is not COP equipped. It has two coil packs on a 4.6L w/ 108,000miles on it. I just replaced the battery for the first time two weeks ago. (yes, it was 14 years old!) This is only the second problem I have ever had. The truck normally runs great.
The check engine soon light did not come on until after I started the truck without the MAF plugged up. I will continue checking te plugs tomorrow. I did , as a precautionary measure, removed the IAC that I had previous issues with, and cleaned it. It was still free and seems to be functioning. It does not appear to have lost power, as the truck will still burn the ole rubber with hesitation, it just idles rough and acts as though it has dropped a cylinder. I did rev it up to rev limiter point today and I was hearing a popping out of the exhaust, as if it had jumped time, or the timing was slightly off....Like te it was advanced a hair to much....an indication of something internal gone awry?
Excuse my crappy typing..... :)
