I have a 1998 s10 with the same problem, trans gets stuck between 40 and 55 mph, but only sometimes. I serviced the transmission, changed fluid and filter, no luck.I have a 1998 s10 with the same problem, trans gets stuck between 40 and 55 mph, but only sometimes. Like the other guy said, the transmisstion sound like it was stuck in one of te gears????? You might need to have the trans. service, like the trans filter cleaned. This might solve your problem.

Have the engine checked for vacuum leaks, that will cause a high idle speed. As a 35 year veteran of auto repair I can tell you that engine flushs are a 100% waste of your hard earned money.
I had the same issue was told it was the voltage regulator so i bought a new alternator and issue was fixed, No longer does it, do your headlights dim right down at 3500 RPM's
I think the shift linkage is all internal so if you can get the shifter pulled out of the top of the trans through the floor, you can probably realign the linkage to a neutral position and reinstall shifter.
There may be something worn or broken that caused it or just one of those fluke happenings.

Don't know...but I would check trans level and make sure it's full and not burned. Is it shifting at normal points (both rpm & mph)?
