SOURCE: Where is the Crank Sensor '99 BMW 523i E39 Auto

are you sure you need the crankshaft position sensor changed. it is at the back of the engine i believe, but.....
check for a wet ecu first... read the note on e36...

the ecu compartment is under the windshield on the passenger side on E36

you gain acess to it under the hood....
this compartment gets wet, the ecu lays on a flat surface in that
compartment.

the bottom side of the circuit board gets wet and starts corrosion.

remove the ecu, take the bottom plate off, clean the bottom of the circuit
board with alcohol and a soft tooth brush.

you should be able to see the signs of corrosion or conductive build up.

this gunk bridges solder points doing all sort s of wierd things to your
car, including false sensor readings from asc/abs controllers and other
sensors....

all the way to engine failure and worst case burnt and shorted wiring
harness.

I'm on my 3rd ecu, took me and the repair boys a few years to figure this
one out.

BTW: i would get that ecu mounted above that flat surface, use some sort
of standoff to raise it so that it is not laying in the wet.

My 523i has a engine icon light appear on the

It could be serious, or it could be very minor. The check-engine light simply means that something has happened and has set a code or codes indicating a failure or problem with something in the engine. Go to AutoZone and ask them to scan the computer (it's free, and a shop will charge an hour's labor to do this). Get the code(s) they give you and post them here as a reply/comment, and we can help you solve the issue.

Were is battery on a bmw 523i

To be completely honest, I know so few about the 2005 BMW's, but the battery location should be simple.

Typically they are located under the hood, usually by one one ofthe hood hinges. However, BMW has been know to put some of them in thetrunk (E46 325i). I have also seen some of them below the rear seat as well (Serie 3). Thebattery may have a cover over it, so it may be a little harder to see.

From my BMW catalog it shows it should be in the trunk, on the passenger's side. See this site: BMW Select

Hope helped with this (remember rated this help) Good luck.
