Engine Management light on VW Golf 1.6L 2000

I have a VW Golf 1.6L petrol car and the Engine Management warning light keeps coming on. My garage has so far replaced both the lambda sensors and now suggests that it "probably is the cat converters" . It is running fine and the emissions are OK. So I think I will simply remove the fuse and keep an eye on the performance. Can you tell me which fuse to remove?

SOURCE: ECU engine management warning light

There is a problem, it needs to go to a factory service center, it can be any one of multiple reasons that turns this light on.

SOURCE: engine management light stays on garage said it

It is usually the catalytic converter, but sometimes it is the oxygen sensor. If you have an volt/ohmmeter, you can check the sensor. Unfortunately I cannot access your wiring diagram, so I cannot tell you which terminals are which on the sensor. There are 4 pins in the plug. Check 2 at a time for resistance. When you find 2 that have a resistance of about 2-5 ohms, those are the heater terminals. Your sensor heater seems to be working. So, then you want to check the voltage on the other 2 terminals while someone revs the engine up and down. If you have more questions, please let me know. Here are testing instructions from autozone.com:

  1. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S). Measure resistance between PWR and GND (heater) terminals of the sensor.
  2. With the engine hot-to-warm, the resistance should be 5-30 ohms.
  3. At room temperature, the resistance should be 2-5 ohms. If the readings are within specification, the sensor's heater element is okay.
  4. With the O2S connected and engine running, measure voltage with a DVOM by backprobing the SIG RTN wire of the oxygen sensor connector. The voltage readings at idle should stay below 1 volt. When the speed is increased or decreased, the voltage should fluctuate between 0 and 1 volt; if so, the sensor is okay.

what are the diagnostic codes? if they are manufacturer codes they should be 5 digits, if they are generated using a non manufacturer scan tool they will be 5 digits beginning with a letter, in your case most likely P for powertrain then four numbers ex. p0121, you may also have U codes or B codes which are basically body and communication codes. Scan the codes, write em down, clear them again, and see which ones come back. The better scan tool the more info you can extract from the vehicle. Keep an eye on the check engine light, immobiliser/security lights etc. Could be a key/programming/relearn issue. Im here if you need me.

How do I turn off engine management warning light without taking it to a garage ?

Normally you would remove the fuse supplying power to the car's computer, for 30 seconds. However the light will just come back on again, because the computer is sensing a problem and trying to tell you.

go to an accredited service center that has experience on your make of car as the guessing is costing you money
the first thing that a professional shop would do is run the fault codes and then decide which codes were attributed to the problem
removing the fuses may cause more problems because you have no idea what the problem is and will never have any idea until the codes are read

I. have a golf 2000.thein exhaust emission light

Hi, you have a problem with the fuel tank evaporative loss system, e.g the fuel tank vent. You will need to take the car to a garage to have the fault diagnosed with a EOBD code reader.

just because the fans come on that doest mean that there is no problem if your thermostat is not operating correctly this could make your engine over heat also while your at flush yout coolant system really good.

You have damaged the exhaust carbon trap most likely, you might try resetting the light and running it for a week and see if it clears itself, you may get lucky

We think it could be the engine management system - would recommend going to a reputable garage for it to be reprogrammed.
