91 oldsmobile cust cruisr, shuddering, engine loping

Vehicle- 1991 oldsmobile custom cruiser
remanufactured engine installed 6 yrs ago, 30k miles on the "new engine".
The tranny was rebuilt 3 times, last time was 13 months ago. cv joint replaced and rear end replaced 2 yrs ago.

passed Ga state emissions right before problem began, only had to get a new gas cap. I had the oil changed at goodyear, 75 miles before problem started.

steps to solve problem I have taken-
new exhaust system, catalytic converter fine.
new fuel filter.
new spark plugs.
higher fuel octane.
Been looked at by 2 garages, problem not found.

This problem has been occurring for 4 months now, only been driven 400 miles in that time.

Current symptoms-
intermittent problem.

coolant level was low once, but the car is not overheating.

Upon starting the engine- at times, it will lope and surge unevenly, slight vibration. Sometimes flooring the gas while in park will solve the problem.

Other times, problem will get worse- until the vehicle begans to lose power/slow down w/ gas pedal depressed- if the gas pedal is pressed down harder, the vehicle will shudder violently for 45 seconds to a minute- but it will "push thru" and eventually pick up speed. The shudder is getting much more violent as time goes on.

I would appreciate exact possible problems to have checked, most mechanics don't know my car and are at a loss- I have twice been asked to buy a new car bc they can't fix this one.

I can't afford a new car right now- if anyone knows of a mechanic in the Atlanta metro area who knows old cars- I would appreciate the contact number/email.

I forgot to mention, that the rpms do not go up when the gas pedal is floored during shuddering. (when the trans went 3 times, the rpms went high w/ engine roaring) The engine does not rev at all during the shudders, if it weren't for the shuddering I would suspect the pedal wasn't connected or something.

Additionally, the problem worsens when it warms up- after a few miles of driving.

it has the chevy 5.0 v8 engine.

endless possibilities...yes, I fear spending thousands w/o fixing the problem.

No obd 1 scan tool on ebay...I looked:( We took it to autozone, where they will scan your codes for free...and they insisted the scanner was useless unless the check engine light was on.

hey emission whiz, your advice is good and well appreciated, sorry if my reply came across wrong:( I am simply beyond frustrated that I can't get my car fixed. I have put over $30k into this car in the past 8 yrs, and can't use it. That didn't come up when I did an obd search on ebay?! Thanks for searching it out for me.

Do u have a OBD 1 scan tool? try and find one on ebay for your car, I sold mine some time back, was $400 new got $50 for it, but I fixed allot of problems like yours because it allowed me to look at real time engine data going to and out of the engine control computer (ECM)

1991 Oldsmobile custom cruiser starts and runs one day and won't start the next day. Have replaced the fuel pump, filter and ignition coil, new plugs. Can't find the ghost!

Hello. It seems your car's engine, itself, is the 'ghost'. If your car has a distributor, it may not be 'rotating' as fast as it should. Another day, it 'rotates' just fine. This will cause the 'ghost' to appear then disappear. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

How often does my 1991 oldsmobile custom cruiser need a tune up?

DO A TUNE UP AT 30000 MILES. BACK IN 80S AND EARLY 90S YOU DONT HAVE 100000 MILES PLATINUM PLUGS AND 100000 MILES DEX COOL ORANGE ANTI FREEZE. THE GREEN. ETHYLENE GLYCOL ANTI FREEZE HAD TO BE CHANGE EVERY TWO YEARS. SOME OF THE 91 CARS HAD DISTRIBUTOR CAPS AND ROTORS DONT LAST LONG LIKE THE DISTRIBUTORLESS IGNITION SYSTEM. THATS WHY YOU HAD TO DO A COMPLETE TUNE UP AT 30000 MILES.

After 20 miles of driving it shifts late and hard from 1st to 2nd

many things can cuase this, the first thing to do is have the computer scaned, there should be codes it there, these codes will give a general idea of the problem. you should also check the trany fluid level,(engine warm,in park, level ground). there may be a few things to check, the distributor cap and rotor, also the wires. you may have weak fuel preasure,or even a bad module, so start by having the codes pulled and will go from there, also it doesnt start now, check the fuel preasure and also check for spark at the plugs.

'06 pt cruiser shudders when stopped

Check to see if theres a recall on the engine mounts on your vehicle. It's very unusual they need to be replaced after 3 yrs. They should last the life of the vehicle UNLESS it was in deep water or is in extreme cold or hot temperatures.
