Hi Kiwi, Have a look for oil leaking onto the exhaust system, particularly onto the exhaust manifold. I'm fairly sure that you'll spot something from there. Regards John

SOURCE: toyota previa petrol smell

I had similar problem some months ago it turned out to be the pipe under wheel arch (corroded) where cap filler is.
my problem was solved by replacing pipe which is connected to rubber pipe fixed to tank and filler hose from filler cap.
tools neede llong large cross head screwdriver, small socket set ( 12 mm , 13mm , 14mm) 150 mm extension bar. to remove bracket bolts
possibly some new pipe clips as others may be corroded.
you will need to jack up car and remove wheel to gain access.
took me about 1 hr, somebody with competent DIY skills should be able to deal in couple of hrs
check with dealer as there are two different pipes on different models one is longer.
my one was the one with the piggybacked overflow pipe.
small hands are advantage

SOURCE: Smells like rubber is burning after I turn off my engine.

It sounds like your heater core is leaking. Check to see if you are losing coolant, are smell like antifreeze???? With 190,000-miles this could be what your smelling??? Just a though???

SOURCE: every now and then i smell oil burning when i use

Most likely an oil leak around the ignition coil packs in the valve covers. Remove the center covers on the valve covers and remove the coil packs and see if you have oil in the spark plug wells and on the coil pack boots. If so you will have to replace valve cover gaskets and the orings around the coil pack holes. You can also get the coil pack boots separately if the are oil saturated.

Try cleaning the Throttle Body and MAF (mass air flow sensor). If that doesn't fix it, an auto electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer can diagnose which sensor is causing it to dump fuel in 'Short Term Fuel Trim'.

1994 Toyota Estima. After driving for a while, I smell gasoline inside the vehicle as well as outside.

Question edited for clarity.

Dangerous! You need to find a new mechanic. Start with the fuel tank. They rust and perforate on the top where is is difficult to see where mud sits on top and slowly rusts away the metal. When you go around corners the fuel slops about and soaks the mud on top. I had this on a Toyota Tercel.

Then check the fuel lines from the fuel tank all the way up to the engine. My sister in law had perforated pipes, just enough to get damp, right under the left pedal where there was also a tiny hole in the floor..

Blue smoke after being driven for awhile

if you can then smell the smoke. if it smells of petrol you will need a tune on your car ( getting too much petrol ). if it has no smell or very faint then it could be your head gasket. (water getting to the head causing steam ) worst case would be piston rings expanding through heat and letting oil through ( smell of oil burning ) check oil filler cap and dip stick for white gunk/check exhaust for water dripping out. these are head gasket signs

Why is my 1998 toyota corolla oil getting short

Is there any white smoke? Could be your valve stem seals. But the Toyota Corolla in this year's is known for burning oil. If you are having to add more than 1 quart per month. You may have a problem. Check for the obvious. Milky oil. Idle it to op temp and smell exhaust for burnt oil smell. Hit the gas...see any white smoke? Open your radiator cap after running and smell for exhaust... If all is well then you have a normal running toyota corolla. These cars are champs. They just tend to burn a Lil oil here and there.

Milky residue in oil cap

Probably water leaking into engine from head gasket. A few engines are prone to condensation from large cam cover surface area. Any oil or smell of petrol in water system?

Engine died burning smell

If the smell is like burning oil or really hot coolant. you may have killed the motor. If it smells like burning plastic ,look for shorthing wires around the exhaust manifold battery, alternator or place that a wire could be burnt. If a rubber smell check for belt failure.

Oil smell smells like it is burning oil last oil change was 3 months ago

Common causes of smelling "burning" oil are:
  1. a leak in the valve cover gasket. When oil leaks from the valve cover gasket, it will often burn off on the manifold.
  2. a blown oil seal causing oil to burn off on the exhaust system
  3. check your exhaust for "blue smoke" a sign that the engine is actually burning oil. Just guessing here but a 16 year old Volvo is bound to have quite a few miles on it.
I hope you found this post helpful in diagnosing your problem. Thank you for using Fixya! Greg
