Problem near the wheels on a Jeep Cherokee

There isn't a problem in reverse. But when I put it into drive and start moving, then it sounds like a flapping sound near the front wheels. Took it to a mechanic awhile ago, but I would like to fix myself. He said if I don't get it fixed, it will crack and then water can get inside and rust. I don't know what it's called that needs to be replaced. Help?

It's a Jeep Grand Cherokee '96. When you mentioned the cv boot, that was it. I got a quote to have it done for $300. Good deal?

If you Jeep is equipped with CV axles ( I can't tell b/c I don't see a year model or if it's a standard Cherokee or a Grand Cherokee, or even if it's 4x4), then he may have been referring to your CV axle boots. They are rubber boots that keep grease inside so as to lube the CV joint. It also keep the road grime and gunk out.

If the rubber boot cracks, then yes, stuff will get in there and it'll make it worse.

It's possible he could have been talking about the inside wheel well lining also. It's a little hard to tell according to the description. But if it's fallen it's possible it may not make noise in reverse, but only in drive. And yes, when it breaks it'll allow road stuff to get up in the front fender and make it rust out.

Both of these projects are pretty advanced, especially the CV boot.

Is the quote for one side or both? Is it for replacing the whole CV axle or just the boot?

If you need the brakes done, maybe get a quote on it as well since he may have to take those off depending on which style axle you have.

I'm guessing you must have a Quadra-Trac Jeep? I remember some boots being on my previous Jeep and it was Quadra Trac. On my other Jeep, it has Selec-trac and instead of boots and CV's it just has a u-joints.

So I'm not sure about the pricing, but just make sure you know exactly what you're having done for that price.

How do i put my jeep into 4 wheel drive? Sounds dumb i know, but I just got a 94 jeep grand cherokee and dont know hwo to put it in 4 whe3l

near the gearstick you have another one, on which it writes 2, 4 , and low, if you put it in 2 you have only the back wheels powered, if 4 you are on 4wd and on low you have a power gear, that gives you more power on the wheels, by changing the gearbox ratio

Four wheel drive wont engage

Hi ninja,

Select-Trac?

Make sure you have plenty of 90 wt. in the front axle. I've got an '86 Cherokee Laredo. It doesn't kick right in to gear. You need to be moving, but not to fast. Sometimes reversing, then back into drive works.

When you disengage it, if you are moving at or above 30 mph, you'll hjear a rapid clicking from the front axle as it tries to let go. Put it in neutral for a second or two. That will take enough strain off the drive train to allow it to disengage.

Best regards
Mike

Jeep was doing ok ,as i came up our mountian i felt two or three small jerks, when i was close to the top it just would not go forward anymore,i tried every gear drive 1st,2nd and reverse,I also tried...

it sounds like your automatic transmission quit his job. How much miles are on the clock? If more than 150.000 and you pulled trailers, climb mountains etc. this will be the first choice. Let the engine idle, push the brakes and check if the car will go in any gear. If this will happen only in reverse gear, your auto trans need to be replaces. You can use a rebuilt auto trans.
