If positive (red) cable, remove from battery, follow down cable and unhook any securing clips, remove the other end from starter. the ground cable will be attached to engine block, as well as body ground location near battery.

This problem is now resolved, thanks to a prior post by sableowner.

The 2003 Sable has the same headlight assembly and removal/replacement instructions as the 2001 Sable. Once I had this information in hand, bulb replacement was easy.

SOURCE: 2000 MERCURY SABLE

My 2000 Sable starts blowing hot air about every 6 months. I mean like an oven. All I do is disconnect the battery negative terminal for about 5 minutes. After I re-connect the problem is solved. This solves many problems on this car, it just needs a re-boot. It must be powered by Microsoft (ha ha). Good luck. ps my auto headlamps never did work right either. Dave.

Check all wires running to battery. Check the battery ground(black) cable for sure. Make sure it is getting a good ground. If necessary unbolt the ground and clean up with a wire brush or wheel.

My 2005 sable wouldn,t start got a new battery car ran fine for three days than would not restart

check alternator belts, it might be loose or missing, if you can get it started one more time, while the vehicle is running detach the positive battery cable from the positive battery post. if car goes dead the alternator needs to be replaced because it is probably bad.

I 2005 mercury sable no charing problems until i jump someones car, now the check charging light is on and battery dies. what do you think it is.

Follow the wire from the alternator, it will hook up to a stud, that's the fuse to the alternator, the other end will also hood up to a stud, the fuse if redtaguler looking flat and black, get a test light and check for voltage at each stud, if only voltage at one end, blown fuse, replace it, most auto parts have this fuse.

1987 Mercury Sable won't turn over. Think we got a bit wire-cutting happy. What wiring is needed for it to turn over? Solenoid and battery are good. Is there a free wiring diagram available?

I don't know if there is a free wiring diagram available, but to turn the engine over you will need to purchase or build a bumper switch. A bumper switch can be easy to build and relatively inexpensive. Get two gator clips and a bumper type toggle switch. Connect about three foot of wire to each side of the switch, this will create a broken circuit. Locate the ignition wire which is on the starter, since there has already been a lot of damage to your wiring, one more cut won't hurt. Clip this wire and skin it back and connect one gator clip and then connect the other gator clip to a hot battery, this will create a complete circuit. Switch the car on and push the button, it should turn the car over if the starter good. If the starter doesn't turn over then that may be your whole problem.

2003 MERCURY THE BATTERY HAS BEEN CHANGED BUT THE STARTER WILL NOT TURN OVER THE ENGINE YOU CAN HEAR THE STARTER RELAY CLOSE

Had the same exact problem on my 2000 Sable. Checked ignition switch. Good. Replaced battery. No change. Replace starter. No change. Starter solenoid engaging when ignition turned on. What it ended up being was an $8 positive wiring cable coming directly from the battery to the starter. Even though it checked good with an ohmmeter.(good continuity) Under load, it became an open circuit. Thus, the 12vdc could not transfer to the starter motor. Save yourself hundreds of dollars and time with an $8 dollar cable.
