Well the float on the fuel pump could be bad or the gauge itself could be bad

SOURCE: gas gauge

The float that moves the gas hand is possibly stuck in the tank. If there's isn't an access hole in the rear of the vehicle you'll have to drop the tank. Unless it becomes free on it's own. Hope this is helpful. Please rate. Thanks

SOURCE: Fuel gauge not working properly Hyundai Accent

The fuel gauge utilizes a voltage stabilizer located on the back of the instrument cluster. if it's faulty it could cause this problem. The other causes are a wire fault (short) between the gauge and the tank sending unit and the sending unit itself being corroded and stuck in the full position (the float assembly that is). One way to quickly isolate (and maybe eliminate) the problem is to get a used cluster from a wrecking yard and swap it out. If it works normally, there you go... if not you will need to access the tank sending unit (this usually, but not always, involves draining and dropping the tank to get to it. Some cars have an access panel in the body over the fuel tank for this purpose... look under the carpeting in the rear of the vehicle) Once you have access disconnect the power wire (usually red or with a red stripe), and with the key on, the gauge should drop to empty. If it doesn't, the problem is not the sending unit. Hope this helps...;-)

SOURCE: 2001 chevy silverado 4.8 gas gauge not working properly

Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

Testimonial: "thought probably that was it but better off replacing whole unit .i was for for gauge proplem thanks. "

SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

Do I need to take out and and then reinsert the fuel pump fuse to reset the fuel gauge

That won't affect the fuel gauge. Different circuits, entirely. Any issue with the fuel gauge is between the gauge on the dash, a little wiring to the gas tank, and the sender unit inside the tank. In most cases, the problem turns out to be the sending unit inside the tank.

To check the gauge itself for working, you can ground the fuel gauge wire at the gas tank connector, and watch for movement on the gauge, with the key in ON. You take the connector off at the gas tank, find the wire for the fuel level sender (or gauge), and touch it to a good ground- a metal piece on the car frame. If gauge is good, the needle will move either to full or to empty, but you can see the needle move to a new point, when you (temporarily, only temporarily) ground the fuel gauge wire. The key in the switch must be in on. If this causes the needle to move, then the dash gauge is good, and the problem is the sender unit in the tank. This unit has a variable resistor, not too expensive. The fun is getting to it.

Gas tank will not fill up on 2001 ford expedition

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in LPG gas? If its petrol, the fuel sender may be out of adjustment. (Usually means a new sender) If its LPG, the fuel stations are set to automatically shut off at 80% full. The gas tank will never actually be full to the brim but the gauge should be showing full if the gas nozzle keeps shutting off. Have a look on the LPG tank itself, they have a little gauge on them which shows how full it is. I have 2 tanks on my car , when "full" or when the pump shuts down, the tank gauges show just under full but the gauge on the cars dash shows full (2005 BA Ford)

Why does my gas gauge needle never go below 3-4 tank?

I would guess the fuel level sending unit is malfunctioning, deposits sometimes build up on the resistor pack, or there is and open circuit in the resister pack, does the fuel gauge needle do a full sweep from empty to full and back when the ignition key is turn to the run position? This is a cluster self check mode, if it fully sweeps than the cluster is ok, I would suspect it needs a fuel level sending unit which is located in the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump modual but usually can be serviced separately

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

Fuel gauge registers full when filled with gas....drive 20mi and then drops to zero...still gas in the tank

The sender unit in the tank is the most likely cause. To test the panel unit, remove the wire from the fuel tank unit and gound it. The panel gauge needle should move up full scale to hot. Remove the wire from the ground and the gauge should return to empty. If this test is ok, the tank unit needs to be replaced.

Gas Gauge won't move

Replace the fuel sensor / sending unit, it is inside the gas tank, it is a lot of work to drop the gas tank, I have done it on other cars... If you want to do it make sure the tank is almost empty it is very heavy with all that gas inside make sure there is no open flames or cigarretes close

If you remove the sending unit in the gas tank, move it manually by hand as u saw done earlier, the gauge on the dash should also move. As long as the sending unit in the tank isn't 'stuck' at the half full level, the gauge should register empty to full as it moves. To be honest, I'm not sure if I would bother taking the sending unit out. 1st, u must be very careful not to blow yourself up when working on the gas tank (no sparks, etc), all u really need to do is fill up your car, see how many miles a tank of gas will go (carry a can of gas with u to see how many miles before u run out). If it's 350 miles, just set the trip gauge to zero every time u fill up, and get gas every 300 miles so u don't run out. If the sending unit moves freely, everything (wiring ) is connected properly, then it probably is the fuel gauge. good luck!
