High Idle on 2004 Lincoln LS

Repair shop just replaced spark plug/coils #1, 2 and 3. Immediately after the repair and now (few days later) there is high idle. Comes down to 900 rpm when warm but that is about 200 to 300 higher than what it used to be. On roads the car will "idle" at 30 to 35 MPH! Also, when I brake and come to a stop the car lunges on its own and RPMs increase momentarily by about 300 RPM! Dangerous on ice. Repair shop says the computer needs to "re-learn" itself. What do I do with this now-dangerous vehicle?

Thank you very very much. Yes, they removed intake plenum to do work and replaced the gaskets. When he said computer needs to relearn, he meant that computer needs time to relearn on its own. Nothing for me to do. I have good relationship with this shop so this will be a bummer.

PS - No codes any more as replacing the plugs/coils eliminated all codes.

There is no relearn procedure when replacing an ignition coil

That shop has no idea how to work on a Lincoln LS

I have a 2004 V8

Most are V6 so I assume they removed the intake to do
the coils 1 thru 3 & now you have a vacuum leak

Very sloppy work, they never smoke tested the intake to
confirm their work

In 9 years I have never had to do a single relearn on mine

Relearn is something you have to look up & do before you
give the car back. It is not the owners responsibility to do

I would say you have to give the shop one time to resolve

Personally any shop that bad I would stay clear of

SOURCE: 98 lincoln navigator loud noise, shaking, high rpm at idle, drive

I don't know how much oil you had to put in but it sounds like you have maybe more than opne issue and both sound major. One is engine reving and speed not picking up sounds like trans problem. Two the engine shaking and making noise and being run low on oil leans toward possible engine damage. If your mechanicly inclined check all fluids and when checking trans fluid smell it. If it smells burnt the trans has been damaged. Check oil pressure and make sure coolant is full. You may have to take it into the shop.

SOURCE: 05 Lincoln LS 3.0 V6. Outside air temp 32F. Idle decay when cold

This sounds like you have a pcv hose that has become an open vacuum leak. It is located under the upper intake, or given the year your air filter box may not be correctly sealed and possibly have a mass air flow sensor concern. Any Check engine light or codes to work with ? I f you have further questions just leave a comment on my page,

I have a 2002 Lincoln LS that up to 3000 rpm seems to run fine. at 3000, it starts to shudder and miss. any ideas/

Yea , take it to a qualified repair shop that has a scan tool that can show misfire data . That's the best way . What engine ? 3.0 L or 3.9 L . Both have COP - coil on plug ignition system . I have replaced a bunch of these coil's an spark plugs . The spark plug get so worn the spark can't jump the gap an fries the coil and if it goes like that long enough it will short out the driver (transistor) in the PCM engine computer . The last one i worked on cost the owner over 2 grand. New computer , programming , new coils , plugs , plus my labor .

Replaced plugs and coils on lincoln 2004 LS 75 miles later check engine light comes on?

Working backward, make sure everything is hooked up correctly ; coils, injectors, vac lines, etc... If everything looks good, you can go to your local Checker, Autozone or O'Rieleys and have them do code pull for you to help isolate fault.

My 2004 Lincoln ls has been acting up. First it was running rough so I changed coil on 4 and then 2 seven monthes later after which car ran great. Now on two occasions when triing to start alarm goes off...

I don't think going to AutoZone for codes is of much
value to anyone

Obviously your LS don't miss on 4 cyl or have 4 bad coils

You didn't need to replace any coils except the one that fails,
which is 1 or 2 a year on that car.

You most likely have one really bad coil that sets all kinds
of codes.

You can buy one new coil & walk it every couple days until
you get to the bad one or go to a repair shop with an oscilloscope
and the correct inductive coil adapter.

You need to use the correct OEM style plugs (NGK)
were the motorcraft mfg.

Check alternator output with a scope & make sure
the battery isn't more than 4 years old. Todays cars
are sensitive to voltage, current, resistance and grounds

My light says ignition coil b. also the primary and secondary.......what is the primary/sec / AT FIRST IT SAYED #6 misfire. also it still has a slight miss at idle and crussin in overdrive . Can you please...

It sounds like you need a coil for # 6 cylinder .LS's have a issue with the valve cover seals leaking oil into the spark plug holes and causing a misfire if this is the case you have to replace all the gaskets for the valve covers clean out the oil and might as well do sparkplugs then too. Its more of a dealer repair then. If no oil in that cylinder try replacing coil and spark plug.

ETC Safe Mode Failure keeps coming on and causing the engine to stop. Has had the throttle changed out twice, replaced all eight coils and spark plugs, replaced valve covers and nothing has helped. The...

You have a really bad COP Coil spiking the PCM,
the signal comes back on the TPS Sensor
and you loose TPS input and then PCM doesn't
know where the throttle is positioned,so it shuts
down the injectors, puts you into ETC Failsafe
and you can only go 6 mph,and gives you TACM
Codes (throttle actuator control motor-the motor
on the throttle body ,you got twice, you didn't need)

I have a 2004 LS V8
I solved that issue for $59.00 plus tax for
(1) COP Coil from the local auto parts store

Now I did have to walk the coil on a 90 degree
day and drive exactly 22 to 26 miles each time
to find the offender.

A Dealer can not fix it
They don't even road test, look at your
in and out mileage.

Recently put an old oscilloscope from a scanner that is
obsolete, on my O2 Sensors
They came up okey but 108,000 miles

Installed new OEM NGK sensors,it is like day and
night, like a new car (wifes car,I like trucks and old stuff)

My coil problem was the second in 2010
I have had lots of challanges with the LS

I got a tune up on my lincoln ls 2003 a month ago never drove my car till now and check engine came on had it checked and they said it misfired that cylinder 1 and 3 are bad how is that when they tuned it...

first things first there is no real traditional tune-up on your car because it is distributorless

the codes that are setting may or may not be related to the work you had done

therefore, get the car back to the garage that did the work and have them retest and/or repair the vehicle for FREE

The oil leak will only cause a COP Coil Misfire---IF,the valve cover O'Ring is leaking oil, onto the spark plug.
If you have a PO304 Code with the check engine MIL Light on,then replace the COP Coil on #4.

Please DO NOT GO TO A DEALER. It is a WASTE OF MONEY

A 12 year old could change a coil, on your LS
All you need is a 7mm socket and wrench, for the coil cover and the one coil screw.
I just did one on my 2004 LS V8 in Feb. It was $59.00 at the local auto parts store
I don't dislike dealers, there is just no reason to go there ,except to buy parts, and only when the parts are dealer only.

I HAVE A 2000 LINCOLN LS. IT IS MISSING BAD AT AN

What you do, is get to a shop,NOT THE DEALER, that has a professional scanner and oscilloscope. Not a code reader. Now you know that codes alone DO NOT tell you what's wrong and never what to replace. I have a 2004. This is Fords most complex vehicle ever. Sort of a test bed for them and a nightmare for us. You will need to find the best driveability tech you can find to work on it. It won't be cheap, nor a quick fix
