My hood latch is broken on my 2001 Subaru Outback. How do I manually opent the hood? I think my problem is the same. I have a 1997 Legacy--when I pop the hood, it releases, but I can't located the latch to open the hood. Usually it's a simple process, pop the hood, push the latch, hood open.

It's only "thanks for trying" because when I went back out and tried to open the hood one more time, I was able to with no trouble. Since then I've had my car at two different garages and no one had an issue with it. I think the real problem was me.

If the cable link to the latch is rusty or broken you have to take the front grid down. It's relatively easy. It's held there by plastic fasteners. Then reach for the latch with you hand, or the leftover broken cable. Pull it, it should release the first latch, than you just have to get to the security latch, like you usually do to open the hood.

Make sure the latch is well lubricated with graphite grease and that the cable and all moving parts are also well lubricated.
    cheers!

Is a rear diff from a 1997 subaru legacy wagen with a 2.2l inter changeable with a 1997 subaru legacy outback with a 2.5l ?

the only way you can do this is if you can identify the gear ratios from both cars with the transmission codes found on the strut tower plate.
see this list to check for matches, read it carefully its a ton of info

Can you switch a rear diff from a 1997 subaru legacy wagen with a 2.2l inter changeable with a 1997 subaru legacy outback with a 2.5l ?

the biggest draw back that you will have to check first is the ratio of the diffs you want to change. If they are not the same but will fit then you will destroy the 3rd diff in the transmission from excessive use.

My hood latch cabel is broken on my 99 subaru outback how can I get the hood open if the cabel is broken.

I assume you mean the cable has broken off the handle? If so, you can locate the cable on the underside of the vehicle (trace it from the hood latch) and pull it with some pliers. If it has broken off the latch, you will need a long flathead to reach out from under the bumper and manually flip the bottom latch the cable is attached to.

The hood of my 99 subaru legacy outback won't shut all the way

Had the same problem... hosed the latch down with WD40 and problem solved. I think salt and road grit build up on the latch. Same thing with the rear hatch release.
