Leakage of Power Steering

I haven't run my van for a few months as it leaks power steering fluid from behind the right front wheel. It doesn't leak all the time but when I turn sharply and a pool forms instantly. What could be wrong?

It's not the wheel bearing! If your sure it's not brake fluid, but power steering fluid you have a leaking power steering hose. Take a rag and wipe down both hoses, fill the reservoir and with engine running have someone turn the steering wheel all the to the right and then left while you watch for leaks. The hose that comes out of the bottom of the pump is the high pressure hose, and the hose that goes into the reservoir is the low pressure hose. You can buy replacement power steering hoses at a auto parts store or a Ford dealer. I would replace both given the age of your van but you can replace just the leaky one. Use a flare nut wrench or open end wrench and remove the hose(s) from the steering box first and have a container to catch the fluid that wil drain out of the reservoir and hoses. Refill the reservoir and turn the steering wheel back and forth to remove air bubbles (engine running). Check fluid level and check for leaks at the fittings.

Bleed power steering on 2008 dodge avenger

to bleed power steering, with front wheels off ground slightly with front wheels pointing straight ahead.engine off. remove power steering filler cap.add power steering until fluid level stop dropping, wait couple minutes and wait, add fluid until level stay at full cold mark on power steering cap dip stick. dont over fill.when fluid level stop dropping, start vechicle, let it idle few minutes. see if fluid level drop if so add more fluid full cold mark.then turn steering all the way to left and right with out hitting a stop.turn steering wheel several times, then turn front wheels pointing forward check power steering fluid level.if power steering fluid level stop dropping air should be out of system, if steering turning wheel dont turn smoothly and power steering fluid look light tan color air getting in the system.check all power steering lines to rack and power steering pump for leaks.be sure you replaced all the power steering lines with new o rings if not you will get a leak.if you find a leak, you need to fix the leak and bleed system again.dont drive vechicle if your steering dont feel right, have vechicle towed to a garage.

Steering hard to turn to the left like power steering is out but turns ok to the right. Checked power steering fluid. It is OK

bad steering problems,,your steering rack most likely, but, have you recently been stuck in ditch? when wheels are straight, look at front of car when parked. do wheels look funny? one going one way, and the other going the other? may be alignment. is it leaking any fluid on either side of the front of the car? drivers side? passenger side? if it's not out of alignment,,,wheels out of alignment,,the steering rack is the problem. it may be faulty. if not leaking fluid,it may still be bad. first i would make a visual test look under the vehicle while someone turned the steering wheel to right and left while car is in park, emergency brake on!! look at the steering arms while they turn the steering wheel from right to left. no fluid leaks? any resistance in turning the wheel? any leaks,if so,go to leak and repair with steering line replacement.no leaks? suspect a bad steering rack. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com i love to volunteer

Power steering fluid leak somewhere behind right front tire, but can't locate the source.

Add power steering fluid, have some one start engine, and turn wheel as far as it will go, that will put pressure on power steering pump, now you can look for the leak, while it's under pressure, good luck.Hope this was very helpful.

Fuel is leaking from the van redish orenge and this happen while i was trying to get out of my drive way. My steering wheel do not stop turning so I take it is my power steering. It may be something else

The redish orenge liquid you see is likely power steering fluid.

The power steering circuit is leaking somewhere.

Inspect/have the circuit inspected looking for busted hose, loose clamps or steering rack leaking.

Depending if the leak is severe or not you can try to add power steering oil in your power steering reservoir up to the right level indicated on the stick. Put the cap in place, start the engine and turn you steering wheel few times gently going from one extremity to the other and reversely. After few times you should/could have recuperated power. However, eventhough it works, for your safety fix the problem as soon as possible.
Hope it will help

Power steering dont work to left or right

To find out witch it is,pump or rack and pinion, break loose the presure line on the power steering pump with a wench.Start the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth, you may need to loosen the nut on the power steering hose two or three turns to get the fluid to shoot out.It should come out pretty forceful. If it doesn`t,then replace the pump.If it does come out really powerful, replace the rack and pinion.

Loud noise when turning wheel red fluid leakage behind driver side tire no loss of power steering and persistantly louder when first driven and then noise almost goes away once 92 lexus ls 400 145000...

that could be the rack and pinion leaking. as far as the noise goes, it is more than likely the same thing. have your local mechanic check it out because if its the power steering pump its cheaper to fix that than it will be to have the rack replaced.
