My 1998 mountaineer has oil leak, one mech said at 196K engine is shot and need to dump it. 2nd mech said could be breather screen plugged, causing pressure build up, and thus oil leak. also mentioned a egv valve as problem????

Oh I agree 100%, that is the frustrating part, finding a trust worthy tech. It was 5-6 small 50cent size leaks, after cleaning engine and carriage, now cantelope size in front area of engine. cannot pin point where it is originating. the ck engine light comes on periodically, it reads 02sensor. mech said oil gets on sensor and trips it. he resets, and its good for a few weeks. the vehicle is in vg cond, does not burn oil, or any other major issues.

The oxygen sensor is inside the exhaust pipe,so much for oil getting on it What he does is clear all data needed to diagnose what codes your have, not reset anything Change the 2 front or upstream O2 Sensors & the MIL Lamp will go out on it's own & try to resolve the oil leaks at a different shop obviously

Doesn't it seem odd to you, that two mechanics can't seem to get
involved enough to try and at least sound like they know the business
their in?

You didn't say what leaks,where it is,how,when,etc

Did they say the leak is fixable?

The EGR Valve, hoses & such, would be a good place to start

Why didn't they do that?

All this talk & no attempt to resolve a thing

We get thousands of people a week on this site alone,
what is going on with these shops, any idea?

Check it out yourself easily by looking for oil leak while engine idling but make sure keep oil level at full level with engine idling few minutes or less depend on how much oil pouring leaking out look under vechicle where oil filter and oil pressure sending unit is thats where oil leak will leak out large amounts.if all is good if you have slow oil leaking a small or mid size leak front timing cover seal leaking or rear main oil seal.the oil pan gasket and valve covers leak oil also.

Oil leaking on exhaust manifold and smoking on 1998 nissan altima 2.4

You need to find out just were the oil is leaking from to start with .I have just done my Mercedes with the same problem valve cover gasket was leaking .Oil was leaking down the side and on the plugs that are hot ,, so it burns off the oil ,this is what you can smell. If other items are doing the same you will need to do that part as well..The breather system may be blocked up also if it is not breathing oil will build up . Good luck

Change sparkplugs

Oil is unlikely to be leaking out of a spark plug, more likely leaking on to it. Many things can cause this including a damaged head or leaking cover gasket. If oil is truely leaking out of the spark plug then your engine is either very worn or your valve oil seals are shot

Oil cap and dipstick covered in creamy sludge, is this breather prob as not losing any water

Yes, it could be that a plugged up Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve or engine crankcase breather (with filter) is the cause allowing moisture to condense in the crankcase. However, if the valve and breather are okay, a cylinder compression test should be done to verify that the cylinder head gasket is not leaking. Regardless, the engine oil should be drained and the engine flushed with clean oil and an appropriate crankcase flush additive. Entrained water in the oil (the creamy sludge) will damage engine bearings quickly.

Why is there oil in the ratiator

2 things can cause this, one there is an oil cooler in the radiator ( it is for the transmission not the engine ) it may be leaking automatic transmission fluid into the radiator. 2nd you may have a head gasket leaking at one of the oil passages that go threw the cylinder head.

Rubber hose for sharan tdi tear. could it be the cause of oil leakeage on the bonnet. apporox 3" hose

Hi
it sounds like an oil cooler pipe or an oil breather most likely the oil breather for the turbo, this is quite common that oil will build up in here and does leak due to the pressure from the turbo, remove the pipe as it should not have loads of oil in it basically just oil vapour that builds up over time then leaks out. cklean it all out everywhere you can see that has oil and see if the problem persits, also the car has a plastic pan / cover under the engine to stop any damage to the bottom of the engine when you go over things, however this is also like a pan to collect oil so it tends to gather in there in small amounts then drips out when the car is moved. the best advice I could give is have the engine professionally steam cleaned with engine degreaser and hot steam.

Once clean any leaks would be more apparent and this ofetn helps diagnose the fault quicker.

I need to know where the fuel filter is located on my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. Also having a problem with the the plugs fauling out, how do i fix it?

does the vehicle run rough? the fuel filter is on the frame towards the middle of the vehicle on the left side while sitting in the truck. you might have weak ignition. check the health of your spark plug wires. does the vehicle have increased fuel mileage or oil consumption? additional fuel being dumped into the engine causes them to foul. they are not able to handle the additional fuel and it turns to carbon build up on the plugs. your ignition system may have some problems

1987 190e Mercedes shooting oil from valve cover in to air cleaner area.

Could be a couple of things.

1st the valve cover gasket is shot because its old.
2nd blocked oil breather is causing high oil pressure which blew the gasket mentioned above.

Replace the gasket 1st and see what happens.
