We own a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM, 3.4 liter, 2 door coupe with front wheel drive and recently replaced the transmission and now can't find our key set. Great start We hired a local Lock Smith who...

You can purchase new Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitters from the dealer or you can order them online at the web sites listed below or several others. Your vehicle provides for programming the RKE transmitters without the use of a scan tool. Follow the instructions below.

2000 PONTIAC GRAND AM RKE TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING

WITHOUT A SCAN TOOL

1. Close all vehicle doors. Remove key from ignition lock cylinder

NOTE: STEPS 2 AND 3 MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 25 SECONDS OF PRESSING THE DOOR UNLOCK SWITCH
2. Press and hold door UNLOCK switch. While holding UNLOCK switch, insert and remove the key in the ignition lock cylinder twice. Do not rotate the lock cylinder.
3. Insert the key a third time, leaving the key in the lock cylinder. Keep the lock cylinder in the LOCK position for the remainder of the procedure. Release the door UNLOCK switch. The chime will sound 3 times to signal that the programming/diagnostic mode is active.
4. Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK at the same time on the RKE transmitter for approximately 4 seconds. The chime will sound 2 times signaling that the transmitter has been programmed.
5. Repeat step 4 for each transmitter being programmed. (You can program up to 4 transmitters.)

6. To exit program mode, turn the key to the RUN position then back to the LOCK position and remove the key. Your transmitters should now work to lock and unlock your doors.

Where is the ignition switch located on a 2000 pontiac grand am gt.

you put your ignition key into the lock cylinder. if you put the right key in, it fits and turns the ignition switch. so your ignition switch is more or less directly behind and in line with your key when it is in the lock cylinder. inside the steering column. it is not easy to get at, and you will find that special anti-theft tools are needed to replace it.

Key ignition switch needs replaced lock cylinder how do i change key broke off inside damaged needs replaced wires broke off behind key switch

disconnect the battery and pull the air bag fuse out to diable the air bag. Remove the steering coulmb trim covers and expose the lock cylinder. If the lock cylinder can be turned and is functional then push in the bottom tab and turn the lock cylinder then pull the whole cylinder out. If the keys broke inside and the lock cylinder is not functional the bottom tab will need to be drilled out.

I have 1999 lexus ls470 -- same problem -- ignition switch

Its usually NOT the lock cylinder on the 470s, its usually the housing. The cylinder is on the dash and points towards the engine. Behind the plastic dash panel (once removed) you will see it in fact sticks in an aluminum tube that goes down 2 or 3 inches, then makes 2 turns, left to attatch to the steering column, and right to attatch to the actual ignition switch. The gear and rod assembly that the cylinder attatches to that allows it to rotate the switch usually shatters in the middle and the key starts freewheeling because there is no longer any attatchment to any of the gears or springs or click points that youd usually feel as the rotational resistance. UNFORTUNATELY this is not a 5 minute job (If it was, cars would be a breeze to steal!). Youll need at least a lock cylinder housing (dealer stock em, they break all the tyme), and IF your cylinder is undamaged, change the housing (it bolts to the steering column and extends from column towards center console area where the ignition SWITCH is actually located). If your cylinder is damaged or the housing is so shredded you cant remove the lock cylinder by normal means...then youll also need the cylinder...and it will have to be recoded to the vehicle so the anti theft will allow the new keys/cylinder to start the car. If your old cylinder and keys are intact, then transfer them to the new housing and car wont even know it happened and should start up and work as normal. Some can be removed intact, some cant...depends on how yours broke.

Change ignition cylinder? (lock?)

Grandammit...Hey...replacing a lock cylinger requires recoded ignition keys, and a new lock cylinder requires dissassembly of the steering column. Not an easy fix, and I wonder if you are really the thief..you don't sound like a 9 month pregnant girl. Sorry......if I am wrong I am wrong. Drive it with a scredriver until you give birth then fix it.
