If you turn the key to the on position do not start the car and you have
no security lights that come on then it may be your ati-theft system.
to try and reset it just leave the key in the on position for ten minutes
or more or until you see security lights on the dash.

SOURCE: 98 pontiac Sunfire shuts self off

You might not need a tumble, the sys is controled by the key, and transponder, and the ecm. Most auto locks smiths can come out and check the system, might just need a key re-programed

SOURCE: transmission locking up

If it has been sitting for ten years....you need to do an engine oil change, and a transmission fluid and filter change.

Ad some fuel stabilizer to the gas tank also. It is available EVERYWHERE.

SOURCE: looking to do a motor swap in a 98 sunfire...what motors fit?

It is true, you can only put another 98 2.2 liter in it. They did come with a 2.4 liter but you have to swap the motor, transmission, wiring harness, computer, and God knows what else. I would go with the 2.2 liter and check into some performance aftermarket parts for the 2.2, computer chip, performance exhaust and so on, somewhere like Summit Racing.

Testimonial: "May 23, 2010 - Thanks for another opinion on that! I guess Ive seen people put some big *** motors in them and was hoping to hear the "oh yeah this is what you have to do..." and it would all work out and be easy as pie! but i guess Ill just stick with the 2.2 that I just picked up...only thing is its from a junk yard...what should I do to it to make it as new as possible without totally rebuilding it? I know im gonna do the head gasket...but what else can I do?"

First of all, make sure the heater core isn't air locked. With the engine running, and your heat temperature on high, loosen one end of the heater hose and see if you can get the air out of it.
