My Alero boggs down on occasion. I replaced the plugs and boots. I also replaced the air filter. The problem is still there. I think that I need to replace the feul filter. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did a new feul filter fix the problem?
The way to erase the code is either take it to a local repair shop and they can hook it up to a computer and erase it, or most major parts stores have one to borrow. You can take it and use it in the parking lot to read/erase codes. Some parts stores will do it for you and some won't. It just depends.
You should have an EGR, you can take it off and clean it with some carb/choke cleaner then let it dry and then put it back on. Then if that fixes it you know you will need to replace an EGR soon. Usually EGR valves are located on the top of the motor. They have kind of a disk shaped thing on top of them. A pic is below of what yours should look similar to (assuming you have the 6-cyl motor.) The part will be approx $90 to purchase from a parts store. (Of course, prices will vary)

Yes, I can get up to highway speed. It takes a while to get there though. There is no check engine light on right now. I don't know what the EGR is. I had it put on a diagnostic machine and they told me that it was missing. I changed the plugs and boots and disconected the battery to reset the computer. The problem is still there.
Yes, it does stumble when I am stopped. It is when I am stopped when it happens the most.
Thanks for letting me know about the battery. I did not know that. I was told that would work. How do I get the code out of there, if I can?

Disconnecting the battery to reset the computer on these newer cars doesn't do any good anymore. The older cars that would reset them. But the newer cars have a memory and they don't "forget" the codes.
The EGR is the Excessive gas recirculation valve. Does the car stumble when you are stopped?
Can you get up to freeway speed? Usually if it is the fuel filter you will only be able to go so fast and then the car just stays at that speed or slower. Have you checked the EGR or is there a check engine light?
