Burning rubber smell inside car-2003 CTS Cadillac

I own a 2003 Cadillac CTS, and have started to smell a rubber burning odor in the car. I can't see any smoke when I open the hood, and don't hear anything unusual.

Diagnosing this will be subject to a process of elimination. It could be the radio, blower motor or any other accessory particularly ones with moving parts; Try switching those off and try to note when this problem occurs and what is on/whatyou are doing. Something is getting hot causing the smell so it will be a situation where the accessory will have to run a while before doing it. It is a possibility that there is an electical curcuit overheating, but less likely. Lets rule out accessories first and give us an update. GL

I have the same problem, just when I turn on the heat.

I also have this problem, in the winter when you have the heat on. Now, I've noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Has anyone found a solution to this problem. 2003 Cadillac CTS.

My 03 cts did this and the smellw as most noticeable in the winter with the heat on. it turned out to be a bad seal that was causing a very slight oil leak. the smell was the oil dripping down onto the exhaust or something else hot and burning. check your oile level!! see if it is slowly leaking. It is supposedly a known problem with the car. Hope this is helpful for someone..

I too experienced this problem after the Cadillac dealership over filled my engine oil during a routine oil change. They wanted $550 to replace the two valve cover gaskets where the oil was leaking. I purchased the parts for $35.00 and spent three hours replacing them following the Chilton instructions available online from my local library.

2003 cts smells like its on fire

I had the same problem. The dealership said it was a dirty cabin air filter. An ace mechanic diagnosed it as a very small oil leak from the valve cover gasket heating up as it ran down the side of the engine. We replaced the gasket and the intermittent burning smell disappeared.

Oil smoke.coming from both sides of engine

Check your rocker cover gaskets for any signs of oil leaks. Oil leaking from your engine can contact the exhaust headers, or other hot parts of the engine and can burn, resulting in smoking and a burning smell.

My car smells like burning rubber inside- 2003 cadillac CTS, is it safe to drive

look under the car at the exhaust you might have a plastic bag melted to the exhaust causing the smell. you can leave it and let it burn off. You can also jack the car up if you feel comfortable doing so and scrap off as much as you can. That is a common result, if not a bag could be a serpentine belt failing.

2006 CTS: Wouldn't start (not dead battery) Burning rubber smell.

My first guess would be the fuel pump is going bad. Sometimes jarring it a bit will make it work again and the tow may have done it. If it does this again have someone bang on the bottom of the gas tank while cranking, if that cures it then you'll know for sure.

Burning rubber smell from Subaru Legacy

Please have your exaust pipes checked, perhaps a mount is burning. The catalytic converter can make a nasty odor when it is clogged. Check the wear on the serpintine belt.

What is the smell and does it have to be fixed?

A burning rubber smell under the hood might be just that - consider having your accessory drive belt inspected, as it is possible that a bearing in one of the accessories (alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, etc.) or in the tensioner mechanism might be failing. This sort of fault will often cause that particular accessory bearing to spin less freely than the others, and as a result the belt continues to pass over the associated pulley at the same speed as the engine. Essentially, the result is similar to a car spinning its tires on dry pavement - and a similar 'burning rubber' odor is the friction and heat of the rubberized belt.

If the odor is more like burning oil than burning rubber, the rear valve cover gasket is situated in a place that results in dripping oil, even small and unnoticable amounts, onto the exhaust manifold that is directly underneath the valve cover.

These two items might be places to start your inquiry. Best of luck to you!

Have a 2003 Cadillac CTS that I first smelled a rubber burning smell come out of a/c vent while sitting at the light only. Then today went to go home and heard all familiar noises when you start a car but...

Hello, I dont know if I can help you or not but this is what was going on with my car: It had the same smell coming out after the car was warm enough. It smelled like rubber burning. I took it to the GM Goodwrench and they thought it was just a loose nut that caused an oil leak. So they fixed that but it still had that smell. We discovered it was our power steering fluid leaking onto the engine. Now maybe your smell is from leaking transmittion fluid and the car's security systems are a pain in the ****. They will lock the car from starting if it thinks you hurt the car. I dont know if this helped but I hope it did.
