2002 camry battery changed, dies in idle

No problem prior to battery change, immediately after change, car cuts off when slowed to idle or stopped. I have a 2002 Toyota Camry Solara. I had my battery changed on Saturday morning and the same thing happened to me. I was really worried until I found this site. Thanks so much! I am off tomorrow so I am going to try the above solution and hope it works.

same problem sputters unless you give full throtle

  • Anonymous Feb 04, 2009

The new battery had the correct CCA rating. I did what the other tech said for someone else. I got on the beltway and went from exit 18 to 31 traveling over 55mph. On my way back, I used the beltway and some back streets to return home. This improved my car a little bit.

I went to the store to get the throttle cleaner that another tech recommended. After purchasing the throttle cleaner, I didn't experience the problem for the rest of the day. The next day is when I actually applied the cleaner just because I bought it.

This sure did beat spending $500 for a idling speed control valve replacement.

Check the manufacture's Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating.  Some manufacturers recommend a minimum CCA.  If your CCA is below the manufacturer's specs, it can cause your car to run erratically.  This also can cause problems with your computer and give you faulty DTC's. (Diagnostic Trouble Codes - Service Engine Soon Light)  This especially causes problems with General Motors cars.  I'm always hearing of people with these problems.  Let me know how it works.

My toyota camry 2003 has low idle and stops when I stop for a traffic light. I just changed my battery

Sometimes a low battery or dead one can erase idle parameters in the computer memory. Also for 2002 to 06 the electric throttle position sender at the top of the gas pedal is very slightly adjustable. Loosen the nut and see if there is enough slot there to bring your idle up a hair.

I changed the 02 Sensors on my 03 Mitsubishi Galant do I need to reset anything on my car? It turns on fine but idles low when put in gear and shuts off.

Its a hot start issue.

Can be related to low fuel pressure or problem with crank sensor.

Also it can be weak battery or starter.

But possibilities are to be inspected to confirm what exactly it is.------

I replaced the starter in my 2002 camry and when I slow down or stop the car cuts off

This could be a fuel pump issue. Have you been running on close to empty often? When you do, the fuel pump burns out and then causes problems when you go above 20miles an hour. The symptom is that the car will just die all of a sudden.

2003 Camry won't stay idling after I changed battery

This is extremely common :)

With time your throttle body gets gummed up with oily residue from the PCV system. As this happens, the computer adapts to the restriction it causes in the throttle body.
When you unhook the battery, these learned values are lost and the default settings for idle control are used. Unfortunately the default settings are no longer sufficient to keep the idle correct with it all gummed up.

Take your intake hoses off the throttle bodies and clean the insides (open the throttle plates for better access) with a rag and some brake parts cleaner or throttle plate cleaner, available from your local parts store.

Reassemble and start the car, your idle problems should be gone immediately.

Changed battery in 2002 camry and now it hesitates and dies when idling

drive it for a week or so the problem should correct itself, but if it doesn't do this procedure to clean the intake and idle motor.
Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

2002 camry battery changed, dies in idle

When you take your battery out and put a new one in all your computer controls have to be reset. You need to drive the car at 55 MPH for 2 min or so, stop, go through normal drive cycle, stop and go and then if it don't straighten out you need to clean the throttle body and the idle air control valve. Hope this helps. PHil
