My 1991 300 zx non-turbo automatic transmission is stuck in third gear. one day i started the car and when putting it in drive it is really slow on take off. it has 0 acceleration. i dropped it in first and nothing changed. reverse works fine. when on the highway going 60 the rpms are at 4000 the over drive on or off makes no difference. i got it up to 120 mph at 7000 rpms and it would not shift. letting off the gas the rpms fall as if it were a manuel transmission. any suggestions?

3rd will rev into the rev limiter before shifting into overdrive after filter and fluid change. What can I do to pointedly fix this problem?

Most likely it is worn synchros. Try changing out the transmission fluid and run Redline MT90 in it instead. The fourth gear synchros were a known weak spot on the Z32 cars, but other gears could also develop trouble. MT90 is known to alleviate a lot of shifting problems related to synchros in the Z, so it's worth a shot.

That means the transmission is going into Limp mode - something's wrong that is making the car believe it can be damaged by the speeds the upper gears will allow you to reach. For starters, check the fluid level (or just change it - it's not a bad idea), and disconnect the battery for an hour or so to put the ECU into relearn mode - this will clear current fault codes and allow you a fresh start to see if the condition reappears, or if it was a fluke failure of some part that caused the car to repeatedly go into limp mode.

I also have a 1990 300zx N/A 2+2, the transmission is computer driven, as is almost everything on the car has different computers.
1st look at the fluid and fluid level, make sure that it is red or pink, not black, smell it and if it smells burnt, you might need to replace the tranny, due to that's a bad sign of internal damage. next I would try a junk yard for the computer and try that, finally I would go to a trusted mechanic and have them diagnose your problem, unless you have a good mechanic that will diagnose the car for around $50, then go there first, due to the complexity of the transmission.

well Im sure theres a ton of miles on it-do u perform reg maint like checkin fluid level-u may need the throttle cable ajusted that hooks to trans-band n clutch could be out of measure too--trans hydra-valve system could be worn--see all these things effect the way the fluid makes the gears move--a pressure test can confirm an aging trans

Check for stuck throttle plate. Check pcv hose that goes to the intake manifold. They get soft and leak, check while running.

The TCC solenoid in the transmission needs to be replaced. It is under the side cover. It controls the converter to lock up for better fuel mileage. If you want to drive car until you get it fixed you can un-plug the connector going to the transmission on the front of transmission. This will keep it from going to lock up mode and keep it from stalling until you can fix it. Common problem.
