Need to know engine compatibility for my 1999 Saturn SL2 DOHC

I need to know what year engines will replace my 1999 Saturn DOHC 1.9 L engine. Are all the 1.9 L DOHC engines compatible? My friend says that only the 1999 engine will fit in my car.
Thanks,
Charles Decelles

How do i know if my 1999 saturn is a SL OR A SC SC OR S1 SO ON

The SL is the small 4 door
The SC is the 2 door Sport Coupe
The numbers refer to the engine. The all have a 1.9 liter. "1" is a Single Over Head Cam, 8th VIN will be an "8". "2" is the Dual Over Head Cam, 8th VIN will be a "7"

So a Saturn SL2 with be a 4 door with a DOHC 1.9 liter. SL1 will be a 4 door with a SOHC 1.9 liter. SC2 will be a 2 door with a 1.9 liter DOHC. SC1 will be a 2 door with a 1.9 liter SOHC.

Engine block interchange

Most salvage yards should have the interchange info you need.

I have a 1998 saturn SL2 with a LL1.9LL4 engine, want to switch out with a 1998 saturn SW2SW wagon with a 16 valve twin cam will this work? SL2 engine blown, SW2SW ****** is going!

If you are replacing a DOHC 1998 engine with another DOHC 1998 engine yes it will work. Saturn only made two engines from 91-99 and they all had the same block, difference some were SOHC and others were DOHC. The number "1" after SL or SC or SW means SOHC while the number "2" after SC or SL or SW means a DOHC.

Note if one is an auto and the other manual you are going to have to swap the flywheel/ring gear stuff over.

Is a 1999 sl2 engine *(block only) compatiable with any other year engine block?

If your thinking of interchanging the head or short block then you can, depending on the cylinders, because the saturn sl2 2000 and 1999 were one of the few models ever to make a 1.9 liter DOHC. if you have a 1.8 DOHC then you should be fine with a 2001 or 2002

Will a 1999 saturn sl2 water pump fit in a 1991 saturn sl1

I would not remove a 20 year old part, and install an 11 year old used part when a new part is only $30.00. I would not go to the trouble of removing any 11 year old part from any vehicle, especially if it involved removing an engine mount, a serpentine belt, and a cam chain cover, when a new part is only $30.00. I would not attempt to swap any engine parts between DOHC and SOHC engines even if the blocks are the same. Do not put in used wear items as you will end up doing it right again in a few months.

How to fix a headgasket

requires pulling the head off and replacing the gasket. not an owner serviceable repair unless you have a lot of tools. while you are at it you will want to do the timing chain as well. might make more sense to buy a lower mileage compatible engine out of a junkyard. most saturn engines from 96-98 will fit in there, you must make sure that if yours is a SL2, meaning DOHC your donor vehicle must have the DOHC as well as the transmissions are different on the SOHC cars. SC1 and SL1 and SW1 have the same engines and SW2, SL2 and SC2 are the same. something i learned a long time ago was that if you have a valve job done on the head before you put it back together, the piston rings will go bad within a few weeks. good luck

I have a 95 sl2 that is leaking oil out the front crank seal and is registering no oil pressure

I think you should call around to local scrap yards and look on your local craiglist for a DOHC saturn engine with much lower mileage. Perhaps even a used engine vendor on ebay could be local to you. In any event I think before you undertake a major engine repair on a 15 year old engine it might make sense to put another engine in there. I do not know if a 95 DOHC is the same as a 99 DOHC but no doubt there are a few years which are interchangeable.

What short block will fit in my 99 sl2 i need to know what years if any that have the same block as my 1.9l dohc engine

Whatever year has the 1.9l dohc engine, but there always different changes to the motor, like intake manifold or the fuel rail. Make sure if you get a different 1.9l it is the dohc not sohc or you have to get the ecm for sohc. From what I know the 95-'00 SL2 have the 1.9l dohc.
