Volvo 850 stereo reset

My 1996 volvo wouldn't start the other day due to the extremely cold weather and when I jump started it and got it running the stereo just says "OFF" on the display and I don't know how to restart it. I don't know where the manual for the car is.

SOURCE: reset check and service engine lights

It's in the console under the coin holder, in front of the gear shifter. You have to remove the coin holder and you will see it.

SOURCE: how do i reset the radio code in a volvo 850 glt sedan 1996

go to your local volvo dealership, and you must have the car in your name, but ask one of the mechanics if you can have the code for your radio, they'll look it up and give it to you I believe.

SOURCE: volvo 850 won't start occasionally

Hey Kolby!

Sounds like you've got an issue with your alarm module, causing the immobilizer to activate (also known as a "start inhibitor"). I'm not sure what type of alarm you've got, but this will probably help you find out if there is something wrong with it:

There is a panel with relays on it behind the dash. At the bottom of the steering column, by the drivers feet, there is a panel. Remove it to get access to the relay panel (just a couple of torx screws, no breakable clips as far as I can remember). Remove the "double size" relay (probably marked 210-211). Put a wire between the terminals 50E and 50F. This will hotwire the immobilizer and make sure that it always activates when turning the key.

Drive around with the wire in place instead of the relay for a while to see if this helps. If it does you'll know that the problem is related to the alarm system. Keep in mind that you will be without alarm and therefore probably also without remote central locking while doing this.
Make sure that the wire is connected firmly enough so it doesn't come loose. You can also put a fuse on it if it makes you sleep better at night ;)

Good luck!

SOURCE: BMW 325xi; 160k; check engine light on-->next day, wont start!

The check engine light is a warning to let you know something needs your attention to be repaired I would try getting a jump. Could be a bad battery. Lets get the battery charged and tested. Cold weather will stop your car from starting if you have a weak battery. You dont need to tow the car just take the battery to Autozone or Walmart to be charged and tested for cca...cold cranking amps

96 volvo 850 won't start and horn and turn signal chirp on and off

My wife ran into this problem one day when she came out of a store. Turns out the car alarm had been set off in her absence, and the alarm system had immobilized the car. The solution was to simply use the remote (rather than the key) to unlock the car. That cleared the immobilizer, and she started it up and drove off.

Volvo 850 tight engine - injectors + oil leak from top of cam cover

could be from
bad injectors
air in fuel
leakdown from problem pressure regulator valve
glo-plugs not operating
pump not producing the desired pressure
at this point I suspect that injectors/ pump need reconditioning as the unit is 21 years old probably never having either serviced
take it to an accredited diesel specialist shop for a proper diagnosis and quote

For bdjenn, I have a 94 850 non turbo with similar problem. You might need to replace the fuel pump relay. Part costs about $50, is located next to fuse box. Also, check the thermostat in the air box under the air filter. The thermostat costs about $20 and often goes bad. When not working, it fails to shut off the hot air and doesn't let cooler, outside air in. Many people just remove the thermostat and fix the cool air intake to stay in the open position. This could be a problem in the winter if you live in a cold climate.

BMW 325xi; 160k; check engine light on-->next day, wont start!

I would try to jump it to see if the starter engages and the engine runs, if it does you have a connection problem between the engine starter and the battery, if it does the same thing with cables then you will probably have to tow it in to the shop. I do not think your problem is related to cold weather, but it could very well be related to the check engine light. Exactly what the check engine light is on for I can not say with out a code, but I agree with your thinking about taking it to the shop. Hope this helps, let me know.

Obd system diagnostic trouble code rejection

IPD, the indy authority on all things Volvo says this is an actual emmission control device. Especially during cold starts/winter. Have this system thoroughly checked at a Volvo dealer or Indy Volvo shop. Could be pump, valve, hoses, etc. But make them show you the faulty part and explain to you how they diagnosed it. This will help you know you are not being ripped. PLus they should take it for test drive(s) to make sure P0410 does not reset.
