1991 Toyota Corolla loud and sluggish

My 1991 Corolla (170k miles) recently became sluggish at acceleration. Shortly after, it started running really loudly and more sluggishly. It was overdue for an oil change, so I changed the oil, but no change in the symptoms. It it spark plugs or did I do permanent damage to the engine?

    Toyota Corolla '96 1.6 240km
car starts fine but does not idle without foot on accelerator
when driving idling still a problem at lights will still stall
has had oil filter change but not plugs
i personally dont think its to do with the spark plugs because when its running long distance there is no problem with engine, or engine starting

You need to do a compression test on the engine cylinders. It appears one of the cylinders is not firing and dragging the rest of the engine down in power. The compression test will show if one of the cylinders has a problem.

I would consider changing the vehicle speed sensor. When they go bad, they can really throw out a lot of bad data to the computer, resulting in unexpected behavior like you're experiencing. They're only around $20-$25. I hope this helps! :)

My 2000 bonneville idles rough. 3.8 liter. it even

Mine did this at one time, and it was only a bad plug wire. Give it a tune up and see if it works. 170k miles is awesome, I have 145k now and it runs great, but had to have ac replaced this week :( Good Luck!!
