Bought this truck from my sisters boyfriend. he had someone replace the spark plugs and wires and the guy didnt put the distributor cap back on correctly so it broke when he tried startin it. Then i came in the picture i found out the distributor needed to be replaced so i purchased one and put it in. Kept backfiring out of the top of motor. took distributor back out and brought the #1 cylinder to the top and put the distributor back in and pointed it towards the number one cylinder. it did not go in directly pointing towards #1 cylinder it either goes in one above or one below so i put it one above and tightened it down.. It cranks over fine and sounds like it wants to start and sometimes fires up for a brief second but will not run or at least stay running for more than a second.. i can smell the fuel and see slight smoke from the the top of motor where the air filter hooks up so its gettin spark and burnin the fuel but wont start.. HELP ME!
The distributor is out of time. Bring it back to #1 TDC and try to drop it in. If it doesn\'t go in all the way, it\'s because the oil pump drive isn\'t lining up. All you do is have someone "tap" the engine over in very short bursts. Eventually it will line itself up and drop in. Unfortunately, even if you get it started, you will probably get a check engine light. If you do, you will need access to a scanner that will display data. Look for a data line called "CMP Retard", make small adjustments to the timing and snap the throttle. Get this reading as close as possible to 0. I believe the tolerance is +/- 2 degrees. If you can\'t get it close enough, the distributor is still out a tooth. ALSO, keep in mind that the air filter must be in place. Without the inlet hoses, the mass airflow sensor cannot read properly.
Good luck!

SOURCE: My 1999 GMC Sierra wont start. It has the 5.3l V8
Sounds like a security problem that is preventing starting. It will run for a few seconds and then die.
SOURCE: 1998 GMC Sierra- runs rough then stalls when
had this problem on my neighbors 98 chevy truck with the same engine !!
it turnd out too be the fuel pressure regulator, you have too pull the upper intake too replace it!!
SOURCE: 96 gmc sierra hard to crank after 12-14 hours
that has a votec engine in it the fuel pressure is droping at knight and it takes 60 psi before the injectors will fire most likely cause fuel pump ,leaking injector ,or a feul pressure regulator
