95 dodge van, 2500. has a BAD engine miss, seems to smooth out when going up hill (giving it some gas) gets bad again when just going cruise speed..

Engine misses bad at all speeds, I can kick it into passing gear and all but seems to not want to go as good as it could. have has some cylinder backfire a couple of times. Not as noticable at idle. Its just a constant chugging, seems worse when your just maintaining speed. I have replaced the spark plugs. Not as bad when engine is cold. This van has a carburator no injectors.

Well to start with, if you have a 1995 Dodge van and it has the original engine, you have a fuel injector for each cylinder. The last year Dodge used a carb was 1987.
So you could have injectors that are not working, or the plugs may not be firing because of the cap or rotor, or it could be a compression or vac problem.
I would want to know which cylinders and then go down the list of possible causes. You should be able to use a vac gauge or tach and pull one wire at a time to find the weak cylinders.

SOURCE: engine misses at a constant speed

i had the same problem happen to me. i had to change the injectors and the injector pump to solve the problem. i would check the lift pump first. when the engine is cold it hasnt had time to pressurize the line.does it restart and run fine when it is warm. if so i would change the lift pump. if not i would have a pressure test done on it. i hope this helps

not clear at all what that drive-ability problem is , evidence not clear.
my guess weak engine , and not bad transmission
rpm rise but car speed does not change bad transmission
so is engine power lost. may be with violent engine misfire
or not at all just smooth power loss, like dragging a 10,000 lb dead weight,
well why not scan the cars PCM while it fails, using logging scanner or do it with 2 persons, one drives other scans. and see all those errors you are missing?
there are 3 causes (macro viewed)
  • bad engine\ VVT failures? compression tests fails?
  • bad spark if not diesel. (a tune up done at all in 10 years)
  • bad fueling (mix) or bad fuel, bad filters ALL.

not clear at all
engine never fails parked, stalls or idle fails and dies.
car/engine fails only moving
or fails parked with foot attempting 2500 RPm in park ?
or up hills
or only one or more gears.
or in reverse.
does engine stall (RPM 0 zero)

Van acts like the fuel filter is plugged, and losses power when going up hills

Do you have a fuel pump? If its bad or weak, you aren't getting enough gas to your engine. Has anyone thought of the filter in your gas tank?

Hi tinkerbel925

Have you tried scanning it with a scan tool? If this much is going wrong there should be a check engine light on. This will tell you what is making your van do all that crazy stuff.

Hesitating when going a constant speed.. seems to be worse when fuel tank is below 1/2 and going up hill

may need to replace fuel filter.or could be an idle control sensor going bad. try running lucas fuel treatment through it 1st, it may only be a fuel injector clogging up, are you burning ethanol gas? i would go with fueling with good gas and adding the lucas fuel treatment !st before you do anything else. if that does'nt work then replace the fuel filter, if not that then i would replace the idle control sensor.hope this is some help to you!!
