Have a 97 corolla that takes long to start and after starting u need to keep your foot on the gas pedal because it does not idle properly and cuts off. If u keep your foot on the gas pedal for about 5 mins, it then idles normally and can take your foot of the accelerator. What may be wrong?

You may want to try checking the gas filter because my car also had that problem and it was the gasoline filter that had somehow got water in it and was completly damaged. I'm not a complete expert but I'm only basing myself on what my car had that did exactly the same thing as yours.

Have the idle bypass valve checked, also called idle air control valve.
If that valve is stuck in the closed position, it's not allowing the fuel to bypass the throttle plate to keep it idling, resulting in stalling, but will keep engine running if the pedal is pushed down.

The first place I would look is the IAC motor (idle air control) usaully on throttle body and possibly dirty throttle body and one last thing could possibley be EGR valve exaust gas recir. as if it stuck open it will lean out engine.
