SOURCE: how to troubleshoot 1993 chevy Z71 pcm

Hi Nsilguero,

I apologize for the delay in responding.

From your description, I'm leaning toward a timing chain problem, first stretching, then skipping and finally breaking.

If you're getting voltage to the coil and still getting no spark, there is a test I'd like you to try.

Take off the distributor cap and have someone turn the engine over while you eyeball the rotor. Is it spinning?

This going to take some back and forth interaction. Comment me back with the results. We will proceed from there.

The fuse will also operate all the power windows, so if the others work the fuse is ok. This vehicle has high failure rate of the switch & the regulator.
Make sure the window "lock-out" switch on the drivers door allows all the other window to roll up at there own switch.

Make sure there is no vacuum leaks.

Vacuum leak at intake manifold and vacuum hose.

Bad Idle Air Control Motor (IAC)

Low compression (170 psi + is OK)

Start cleaning and repair these trouble spots and see is there any improvement.

====

For more advance DIY'er then you may try this.

Use a can of Berryman carburetor clean to locate the vacuum leak.

SEE SAMPLE PICTURE HERE

This is a 20-30 minutes job.

Vacuum leaks can occur in following locations.

Intake manifold AND/OR vacuum lines.

Intake manifold is not accessible unless the engine head if off.

You can still check the potential leak by spraying some Berryman near the intake manifold.

Listen for rpm increase after you introduce the Berryman (FUEL) at idle.

Do the same starting from the brake booster unit (the round unit) on the drive side fire all.

Carefully listen for increase of RPM right after to spray the Berryman to the potential vacuum spot.

Get a friend to HEAR the RPM increase or monitor for RPM on the tech.

DO NOT AIM the Berryman into any heat source.

When she accelerates her check engine light comes on and flickers, is it her ignition coils? 2006 Chevy Cobalt LT

You need to connect it to a professional quality scan tool computer to diagnose issues like that. A basic scan tool will give codes, but yours isn't steadily on. The 'let's try replacing this' method of car repair is not cost efficient.

scan tools that have the capability to read all cars cost upwards of $15,000.00

Scan tool want connect to ecm

Year/make/model/?? If there is no power at the ALDL/OBD port the scan tool will not connect. The power is usually provided from the accessory fuse. If the power outlet/lighter is not working, this will most likely be the fuse/problem

FUSE check engine light

If you are trying to reset the light, use an obd code reader. Autozone can do this for free. If you are wanting to try resetting by powering it off, look for the ECM fuse in the fuse block. Or you can disconnect the battery for 5 minutes.

The warning light that looks like an engine is lit up

That is your "Check Engine Light" / "Service Engine Light". It means the Computer (ECM / PCM / ECU, it goes by many names) has detected a problem with one or more parts on the engine or transmission.
The easiest way to find out, is to stop by an auto parts store (like Advance Auto, Auto Zone, etc) and have them hook up a Scan Tool to read the Trouble Codes from the ECM. They do that for free. Most if not all garages/mechanics also have the necessary Scan Tool as well, but most of those will charge you just to read the codes.

My serice engine light came on. what can the problem be?

You need to take your truck to a shop and have it checked. The service light can mean anything from a simple bad connection to any part or combination of parts involving computer, engine controls and or emmission controls. Unless you are very knowledgable in these areas go to a repair shop mistakes in repairing these items can cause damage and or be very expensive.
