The car has 65,000 and is running it's 3rd complete set of tires and the right rear is always slick when there is 50% tire tread left on the remaining 3. At best, the right rear tire is only good for 15,000 miles.
I understand what you are saying about rotating tyres but it's got a rear sway bar aswell and it's only started eating through the right tyres since the suspension started making a clashing metal sound every time I goover a bump and I think it's cracked the rear left rim due to it being so bad that tyres goes flat to 20 psi every day
Why not slap on a new set of Goodyear tires and be done with.....the car really doesn't need the sticky compound tire, as its not driven as a sports car....the police use Goodyear pursuit tires and get better wear than you are....
THese cars have a high speed rated tire and will almost always wear quickly. The right rear is the drive wheel (where the power goes when you give it gas) It will wear real quickly if you drive it hard. I would try rotating every 7500 miles (unless tire sizes are different as with the SL series) I sell a lot of tires on these cars and 25K is usually the limit.
Replacing one tire at a time is never a good idea unless of course you blow out a new one and need it replaced. Regardless... I would start rotating the tires every 6 to 8k miles (assuming front and rear tires are the same size). It always amazes me that Mercedes and the like don't tell there customers that the tire life is as stated previously 18 to 25k at best. These tires are designed to grip and stick. They are a soft rubber compound similiar to a sports car tire. When you replace one tire or even two at a time you lose your ability to effect a proper and benificial tire rotation. I relize this advice may seem painful but, start with a fresh set and have a rigid rotation schedule. I would also have the alignment checked as this will add to the already quick wearing nature of these tires.I hope this is helpful as much as I know it's not what you wanted to hear.

My wife is the only driver. I drive it to get it serviced and to REPLACE TIRES! She is a very conservative driver and I seriously doubt the car has ever had a jackrabbit start or driven over 80 mph. The original tires were Pirelli. The first and only full set replacement was at 20,606 miles. These tires were Michelin XGTH4 Pilot 235/45HR17. Since then, the tires have been replaced with the same tire, 1 at at time:

Total= 14 tires, including original 4. Tires are rotated, balanced and recommended air pressure observed.
Thanks for all the help. You are correct, the answers are painfully correct and not what I wanted to here. One last question.....does anyone have any suggestions for tires I might try other than the original Pirelli or the current Michelin Pilot Exalto?
These tires are Michelin XGTH4 Pilot 235/45HR17. In the last 40,000 miles, I have bought 10 of them and pay around $190 plus tax, mounting, etc. I am just wondering if there is another brand that might give longer life?
are you the only driver of this car? Do you have a teenage son or daughter who may be burning the rubber off the right rear?
left tire inside and outside wear out faster than the right
I'm wondering if any of you have had this issue. I replaced my tires about 3,000 miles after I got the car, then about 5,000 miles after that, it has been 1,00 miles since they were last replaced and the tire tread on the back tires is nearing the legal limit. I have had the wheels aligned, and had the alignment checked, They are Michelin tires from Costco. I drive the car to and from work, and occasionaly across the state, nothing that should have caused this wear down. Not sure what the issue is.
