Engine runs poorly

I have just renewed the fuel filter, my old filter was fitted with the flow arrows pointing in the wrong direction. I have fitted the new one correctly. Having fitted the filter I turnex the engine until there was fuel in the system. The engine staRted but now runz poorly, really jerky on acceleration and normL running. It sounds as if it's missing on one cylinder but just wondered if it could be anything else. Maybe throttle position sensor.

SOURCE: Struggling to Accelerate immediately after starting engine

Definitely not the fuel pump. A fuel pump will either work, or it wont. It could be a fuel filter, though unlikely, again if it was clogged there would be nothing. Could be spark plugs/wires, a faulty coil pack, Could also be a handful of sensors (o2, MAF, are a few that come to mind). Does it have a manual transmission? If so can the car be started without engaging the clutch (in neutral)? If so check the 2 clutch sensors attached to the clutch pedal.

Probably a sensor. Go to Advanced Auto parts and have them pull the code. Then google it. Or check out Forums.vwvortex.com

SOURCE: I keep getting a PO221 code reading on my OBD-II

You need to test voltage and ground if you have less than 5 volts you have a problem with voltage not a problem with the throttle position sensor you may have gum build up in the throttle plate not allowing the plate to go to the full close positions and that can throw the same code you are getting. Also if you have a reading of .2 ohms or more from battery post to ground or to engine to ground or to engine ground to throttle to ground that could be your problem, after testing these items then next step is testing computer. But try cleaning the throttle assembly plate inside the backside and in the mouth where the plate goes. Also the Wide-open and idle position must be set when replacing the sensor or you will get the same error.

Testimonial: " I can't thank you enough. It does make great sense. I can do this cleaning of the throttle body. Again, thanks. I'll give it a go."

Ignition system sounds probable on vhicle when everything gets warmed up. High pitched hum could be bad tire or worse bearing.

Testimonial: "Thank You for your response. The huming sound is present on idle from start-up,tires have just been replaced, would fuel pump be suspect?"

SOURCE: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Range Performance

there is no adjustment on these tps's it's a drive by wire system. If you don't know the vehicle, dont post!
there's 2 sensors contained in the pedal sensor, and one on the throttle plate shaft, more often than not, it's the pedal sensor, and if you replaced that, it's the other one or a loose connection. did you reset the computer after replacing the pedal?

Which end of the fuel filter goes in first on 1973 chevy nova 6 cylinder 250 cid engine

The filter should have an arrow on it. That is the direction the fuel flows. The arrow should point to the direction of your carburetor.

On a '95 winstar, where is the fuel filter located?

Fuel Filter Fig. 3: The fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the driver's side frame rail 89691g08.gif
Note the arrow showing direction of flow. It must always point toward the front of the vehicle 89691p14.jpg
Although the manufacturer does not specify a replacement interval for fuel filters, we feel the fuel filter should be replaced every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) under normal conditions or 30,000 miles (48,000 km) under severe conditions. NOTE: For fuel pressure relief and push connector fitting removal, please refer to Section 5.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Place a rag under the fuel filter to catch any residual fuel that may leak out when the filter is removed.
  4. Remove the push connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter.
  5. Install retainer clips in each connect fitting.
  6. Note the flow arrow direction for installation reference.
  7. Remove the fuel filter by pulling from the bracket. To install:
  8. Install the fuel filter in its bracket, ensuring proper direction of flow as noted earlier.
  9. Install push connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Start the engine and check the filter connections for leaks by running the tip of your finger around each connection.

The arrow is the flow of fuel and it should be pointing to the engine. That is where it going. It will work backwards for a while till it clogs up, there is no room for debris in there but one way. Check it out.

Need To Know How To Change A Fuel Filter?

To replace the fuel filter ,You should use "line" wrenches to loosen the fittings (will prevent "rounding "of the fittings.) you can unbolt the holder from the frame to ease removal of the filter..Check for an arrow for direction of flow.Use a drain pan to catch the fuel that comes out.Be cautious that you don't twist the lines when loosening the fittings. The fittings on the lines should spin not the filter. Dont overtighten the fittings .Remount on the frame. Run the engine and check for leaks.!

Changed the fuel pump and fuel filter but now car

It could be that the fuel filter was put on backwards or it could be the wrong filter. Some fuel filters will only allow the Fuel to flow a certain direction properly. There should be an arrow pointing the direction of flow on the filter or in and out are stamped on the end of the filters. If you can I would crawl underneath your car and locate the fuel filter. Look for the fuel line that comes from the fuel tank and follow it to the Fuel filter. Look for the arrow or the in and out. The back of the arrow should be where the line comes into it from the fuel tank and the head of the arrow should be connected to the line going towards the front of the car. If in and out are stamped on the filter, the line connected to the IN side of the filter should be the line coming from the fuel tank and the Out side should be the Line going towards the engine.. Hope this helps a bit

How do you replace Fuel Filter on a 2006 5.4Ltr. Ford F150?

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and relieve the fuel system pressure.
    1. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter. Have a drain pan handy to catch any residual fuel once the lines are separated. On newer models, disconnect the fuel lines from the filter as follows:
    1. Disconnect the safety clip from the male hose.
    2. Install and push the fuel line disconnect tool into the female fitting.
    3. Separate the male and female fittings.
    4. Inspect the fuel lines for any damage after the fuel is finished draining.

    1. Remove the fuel filter from the bracket and the retainer, if equipped. Note the direction of the flow arrow so the replacement filter can be installed correctly.
    To install:
    1. Position the fuel filter into the mounting bracket with the flow arrow pointing in the correct direction.
    2. Install the fuel lines to the fuel filter. On newer models, align and push the male tube into the female fitting until a click is heard. Pull on the fitting to ensure that it is fully engaged, then install the safety clip.
    3. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
    4. Re-install neg. batt. cable to battery.

Changing fuel filter on 2002 Mazda pickup

Clean all dirt and/or grease from the fuel filter fittings. "Quick Connect" fittings are used on models equipped with a pressurized fuel system. These fittings must be disconnected using the proper procedure or the fittings may be damaged. The fuel filter uses a "hairpin" clip retainer. Spread the two hairpin clip legs about 1/8 in. (3mm) each to disengage it from the fitting, then pull the clip outward. Use finger pressure only; do not use any tools. Push the quick connect fittings onto the filter ends. Mazda recommends that the retaining clips be replaced whenever removed. The fuel tubes used on these fuel systems are manufactured in 5/16 in. and 3/8 in. diameters. Each fuel tube takes a different size hairpin clip, so keep this in mind when purchasing new clips. A click will be heard when the hairpin clip snaps into its proper position. Pull on the lines with moderate pressure to ensure proper connection. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks. If the inertia switch (reset switch) was disconnected to relieve the fuel system pressure, cycle the ignition switch from the OFF to ON position several times to re-charge the fuel system before attempting to start the engine.
0900c15280192eed.jpgRemove the "hairpin" clip retainers to access the fuel line fittingsThe inline reservoir type fuel filter should last the life of the vehicle under normal driving conditions. If the filter does need to be replaced, proceed as follows:
CAUTIONIf the fuel filter is being serviced with the rear of the vehicle higher than the front, or if the tank is pressurized, fuel leakage or siphoning from the tank fuel lines could occur. to prevent this condition, maintain the vehicle front end at or above the level of the rear of vehicle. also, relieve tank pressure by loosening the fuel fill cap. cap should be tightened after pressure is relieved.
    1. Shut the engine off. Depressurize the fuel system.
    2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    3. Detach the fuel lines from both ends of the fuel filter by disengaging both push connect fittings. Install new retainer clips in each push connect fitting.
    4. Note which way the flow direction arrow points on the old filter.
    5. Remove the filter from the bracket by loosening the filter retaining clamp enough to allow the filter to pass through.
The flow direction arrow should be positioned as installed in the bracket to ensure proper flow of fuel through the replacement filter.
    1. Install the filter in the bracket, ensuring proper direction of flow as noted by arrow. Tighten clamp to 15-25 inch lbs.
    2. Install the push connect fittings at both ends of the filter.
    3. Lower the vehicle.
    4. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:
      • Negative battery cable
      • Push connect and R-clip fittings from the fuel filter
      • Fuel filter 0900c15280192eee.jpgFuel filter location and connections–2002–2006
    To install:
    1. Install or connect the following:
      • Fuel filter. Torque the nut to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
      • R-clip and push connect fittings
      • Negative battery cable
    2. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
