2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited (old body style) Automatic seat motors

Last week I was cleaning my Jeep and moved the seats forward and up to vacuum under them. After I was done the motor that moves the seat upward/downward (there are two of these on each seat; one for front of the seat, one for back of seat) for both my passenger and driver seats no longer work.

When I try to move the backside of the passernger seat downward on all that happens is a click sound when I push down on the up/down control button and no evidence of the motor turning.

When I try to move the backside of the driver seat it sounds like the motor is turning, but the seat isn't moving up or down, so maybe a linkage of some sort is broken?

The car is old and I'm considering replacing myself as I'm sure it will cost a small fortune. Is this something that a person who can turn wrenches but is no expert can do? If so how do I go about finding out the proper procedure (preferrably with diagrams) for removing the seats and replacing the motors / auto adjustment components?

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited passenger power seat will not move forward or back but does recline and raise up and down. Is the switch bad or the motor?

There are several motors under the seat. BE CAREFUL not to pinch fingers, Do this feel one motor as you move the switch up and down until you locate the working motor then hold the switch in the forward or reverse position as you tap the other motor with a small hammer and if it goes replace the motor if not suspect the switch. I hope this helps. Take care.

I have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee and the power seats will go up/down and tilt forward/backward but the seat is all the way and will not move forward. What can i do?

Hi Christy,

The first thing I would do is to look under the seat with a flashlight and see if there are any dammaged wires. This is the most common cause of seat failures. Things get stuffed under the seats, then the wiring gets dammaged when the seats are moved back and forth.

Other than that, all I know to tell you is that you must diagnose the circit that runs the motor that moves the seat forward and back. It could be the switch, the wiring, or the motor itself.

Seat will move up and down but not forward and

There are cables that run the seat up down forward and back. It sounds like the cable has broke for the foward or back adjustment. They are hard to get to I know unless the seat is removed to check

Jeep GC seat will not move

I would check the switch first which is cheap to replace. you cant really test it but just to replace it. If the switch is good more likely you will have to replace the the motor, if it faulty the seat will not move forward or backward. it not hard to replace if you can remove the seat.
