If the reservoir is full of brake fluid.....try backing up several times, and stand on the brakes hard, this allows the auto adjuster to adjust the brakes....keep doing this until your pedal gets better.....please rate me...
If your not losing brake fluid, then I would suspect the master cylinder is failing and needs to be replaced or rebuilt.
I would also compare brand new brake pads and linings with the ones installed on your vehicle. Disk brake pads can be deceiving when it comes to looking to see how warn they are, vs new ones.

I think you found both of our diagnosis to be dead on, and that you will find that too when you get into the repair, unless there was an additional piece of infomration that you did not remember to tell us.

This is caused by a defective brake master cylinder, this assumes the system is not low on brake fluid.

Thanks to everyone for their comments on the 1996 toyota corola brakes,i was hopeing that wasnt the problem (master cylinder )but it looks like i am going to replace it,cause evrthing else looks good. Again thanks.
