Volvo v70 2003 cuts out when decelerating hard & steering locks

A few times in the past couple of months when I make a turning into another road my car engine has shut down and I have halted rather dangerously into the kerb. My wife was driving up to a roundabout last week and the engine shut down as she was delerating up to the junction. What do you think is the cause and how to I solve it?

The problem wont be your timing belt. you need to take out a spark plug plug it into your HT lead and check for a strong spark or even if there is a spark. check your contact breakers on the distributor as well

look in the trunk... either it has side panels that can be removed... or you will see a hole in the side of the lining with a sticker that points out where it is.

SOURCE: My Volvo 960 stalls while driving

It could be a number of things. Fuel Flow problem, or electrical apparatus heats up and works inefficiently. You could start from the cheaper, less strainous solutions, in this order: Change Fuel Filter, and clean Nozzles. Fuel Pump, Air Mass Meter.

SOURCE: volvo s60 idle sensor

if you could get your hands on a scanner to read some live data it would help your plight, there is a cam position sensor when you take of the the plastic head cover at the timing belt end,did you check plugs,it also might help to clean the maf with some contact spray, sounds like plugs

Remove and replace power steering pump on a 2003 Volvo xc90

Write down a little diagram on the routing of the serpentine belt!!!

Then use a 1/2" or 3/4" wrench with a short extension to insert into the belt tensioner and undo the tension to unhook the belt.

Then it's pretty straight forward, undo the hose, undo the line, then there are holes in the pulley that you turn until they line up with the bolts and you can undo them.

Install is the reverse. :) Oh, and make sure you get the right fluid. I think Volvo specifies the Pentosin CHF11S, but the Pentosin CHF202 is compatible and easier to find/get.

When you refill it, the easiest way I've found to bleed the system is to fill the reservoir, twist on the lid half a turn (to lock it in place, but not tight, you want to let air bubbles escape) and then have the front wheels off the ground and turn the wheels lock-to-lock a couple of times. Then check the fluid and bring it back to level, then do the lock-to-lock steering thing again. That should have most bubbles out. Make sure the oil level is good and then snug the lid down and start the car.

The engine will run the pump and you can steer it lock to lock a few times again and re-check the fluid.
You DON'T want to run it low, because when you start wearing seals and parts in the steering, you will at some point end up replacing the rack, which is messy to do on your own, and expensive if you have a mechanic do it.

Good luck!

I'm bleeding the system after replacing the power steering pump, I already jacked the front end up and checked resivoir levels, and went end to end on the steering wheel, then lowered the car checked...

you are supposed to replace it with only Pentosin CHF-11 hydraulic fluid or something equivalent. And also maybe your used pump is bad, or you have air trapped. To bleed it turn lock to lock many times and hold it at lock for few seconds.Check this video out. Volvo S60 Power Steering Drain and Fill

Hard steering

The pump may not be working as and is now under stress caused sometimes by the power steering pipes braking down on the inside of the pipe. You will have to replace the pump and check the pipes from the power steering pump.

My Volvo XC90 steering feels as if it has no power steering when starting from cold. It then 'clicks' soon after driving a couple of hundred metres when the steering is turned left or right. I

Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir and also see if it needs flushing. You could probably "cheat' a flush by using a turkey baster to suck out all the fluid and replace it with fresh fluid, then a day or so later, repeat it. Do this a few times until the fluid remains pretty clean (meaning you've replaced it all) and see if it behaves normally.

Going from memory, I think your car needs a specific Pentosin fluid (CH11? CH202? something like that) - make SURE you get the right fluid.

My friend's 89 Volvo 760 Turbo steering wheel is stuck in the lock mode. What can I do to fix it?

ignition is locked, and will not turn over. do you have any suggestions on what the issue could be?

My steering wheel is locked on my 2001 Volvo. What do you mean by turn the wheel INTO the steer? I'm a new driver and I'm not sure which way I turn the week to release the lock.

if the wheels are pointed to the left than turn the steering wheel gently to the left. If there is to much pressure on the steering wheel position lock it will make it difficult to turn the key. Taking the pressure off the lock by steering the wheel into the direction of the turn will help take the pressure off. If that is the problem the key should turn. If the key still doesn't turn than there is a problem with the lock cylinder.

With the key removed from the lock cylinder you can tap on the lock cylinder with the handle end of a screw driver. After a couple taps try turning the key again. Repeat a couple of times. If the key turns after trying this than the lock cylinder needs to be replaced ASAP.

Flushing is recommended. Have a look at the upper and lower couplings at the steering rod just before the steering rack which could be jammed.

'88 Volvo 740GLE won't get past 30 mph

Horrible squeal. If my 740 made a horrible squeal I would be upset also. These ideas - timing belt has somehow slipped out of time. Easy check. One of the other belts are slowing the engine any of them can squeal: The alternator belt The power steering belt The fan belt. Does the noise occur only when driving? Does the engine sound normal when revving in neutral? Does turning on the lights or a/c affect the noise? Does the power steering work when car is standing? Is the squeal heard when turning the wheels. A logical diagnosis will identify and eliminate these easy to fix problems.
