2004 Explorer Sport Trac 4WD problem!

2004 Explorer Sport Trac. Stuck in 4wd high a couple of times about a month ago, now no 4wd low at all. Tried 4wd high yesterday and it engages but jerks out and then back in about every 10 seconds.

SOURCE: My 2003 Ford Explorer is "stuck" in 4wd low

Most lkeley it is the solenoid that controls the link that has siezed. It gets the worst of conditions down there, so will need a clean and service if possible - or replacement.

the front axle bearing could be shot. This is common. Also the hubs may not be locking which is even more common

OK, this seems to be a common problem with ford4wd's. Put the vehicle in reverse and back up about 210 or 20 feet while holding the 4Hi switch, If it is still in 4Lo, continue holding the 4Hi switch while pulling forward and backward several time. As a last resort, crawl under the truck and tap the electric shift motor with a hammer(lightly), then try the reverse movement again. Goo luck, and let me know how it goes.

2005 Ford Explorer sport trac 4x4 transfer case

read the operators guide, part time 4wd is only for dirt, snow/ice
not for pavement dry or only wet
that act is called crab walking wind/bind up.
learn how to use part time 4wd, and not wreck your driveline
nor get in to a wreck doing this act.
why post at all and not tell what the tires are running on/.
we can't guess roads you are on.
sorry .so my answer is same and posted here 100 times
same. for part time 4wd
it is not full time or AWD

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L Hemi service 4WD System problem. Jeep shifts into 4WD Low while driving, all on its own.

okay not one word what the tires of the car are rolling on
dirt or ice. or raw hard pavement
nor the exact control settings are set.

the jeeps have many 4wd options new, (I have 2020 here)and I have full factory service manuals on all GC. made. gen 1,2,3.
most have Three levels of 4WD.
2005 to 2010 same as mine.
came with 2 choices new of transfer cases not told by you at all.
lets do both and answer what THEY DO and DO NOT DO.
nv140
The NV140 Quadra-Trac I (no part time modes) and uses brakes top stop tire slip. (smart)
is a single-speed transfer case and it is used in the Quadra- Trac I Full-Time 4-Wheel Drive System. It
provides full-time 4-wheel drive. The transfer case operates with an open center differential dividing engine torque
nearly evenly with 48 percent of engine torque to the front axle and 52 percent of engine torque to the rear axle. SO NOT YOURS

yours is this, read the users guide on 4wd low limits.
nv 245 has ,Quadra-TracT II and Quadra-DriveT II systems.
4wd low and lockups up the center differential.
and is not for pavement. (lacking ICE covering)
4WD Low, which multiplies engine torque 2.72
times and locks the clutch pack for maximum traction at all times
key word LOCKS. this for offroad and or ice only.
not for pavement.
do not use Low. or any kind of part time 4 wd modes, on pavement free if ice. (no matter the car owned)
or you windup the axles and steering fights the driver.
and is very dangerous to do and makes ABS go nuts. etc.
read page 240 in your users guide.
240
The Quadra-Trac IItransfer
case provides three mode positions - four wheel drive
high range, neutral, and four wheel drive low range.
and
The 4 LOW position is intended for loose, slippery
road surfaces only. Driving in the 4 LOW position on dry
hard surfaced roads may cause increased tire wear and
damage to driveline components.>. bingo the D word,.

if stuck in 4low
move one or more tire to ice or dirt.
shift out of 4low to 4hi at dead crawl speed, the slower the better
not grinding teeth to deathh wins.

4low is for dirt
or stuck in a snow drift.
otherwise stay out of 4low

Stuck in 4x4 low 2005 ford explorer sport trac

Make sure the transmission is in neutral before changing from 4wd low to 4wd high. After selecting 4wd high wait at least 5 seconds before selecting 2wd. If this did not work then you may need the selector motor that is attached to the transfer case. Please write back if you have other questions. Good lucks.

I tried it in 4x4 high and low out of curiosity and it was fine either way but now it won't let me shift back into 2 wheel drive. It's stuck in 4x4 low. Help please. Thank you in advance.

if you open up your drivers door there will be a sticker inside there that tells you proper tire sizes and proper inflation for front and rear tires

I just bought a 2004 grand cherokee V8 for my son. It has 4wd but the stick slides easily between 4wd all the time, Neutral and I'm wondering if that means it's not working? The whole point of buying was...

Not sure what you mean by "4wd all the time, Neutral".
But I can tell you how it's supposed to operate.

The three modes are 2wd, 4wd high and 4wd low. When switching between 2wd and 4wd high it makes no difference whether the Jeep is moving or in neutral. The only condition that needs to be obseved when switching from 2 to 4 high is the speed of the Jeep. It should not be done above 45mph.
The switch from 4wd high to 4wd low is a different animal. The Jeep must be stopped and in neutral. Also you should be aware that it is not a pleasant sound or feel when moving from high to low so you should worry to much about the lowed junking sound.
At times it may even be necessary to put the lever back to the high position and move the Jeep a couple feet to align gears before it goes into low.

This is the reason for the relative ease when switching from 2wd to 4wd high.
There is an art to switching from 2wd to 4wd high then to 4wd low. Once your son becomes familiar with the Jeep and begins using the different modes it will become easier.
I would like to add one more piece of advice. After building Jeeps for over 25 years and owning several I have found that 8 out of 10 times that 4wd low is used, it's used incorrectly or not needed at all. It's a good idea to find someone who has experience with 4wd to give a bit of instruction on how it should be used. Especially in the mountains.
Let me know if you need any clarification on anything.
I hope this helps.
