It is not a consistant noise. The popping is very loud, It will last only a few seconds in most cases, and will start again and then stop with no pattern or consistancy in when it does it. Some times at slow speeds some times at highway speeds. We can go days without hearing it. It doesn't change if you brake, turn or speed up. 2001 Chevy Tahoe LT4x4 5.3L

If the squeeking is happening over bumps, and is not related to breaking, it could be a bearing in the steering linkage. My tahoe is doing the same thing, and my local garage says it is only a dealer fix. That is why I am searching this site now, is to find out if anyone else is complaining about this. I was told that GM is fully aware of this problem.

Your lifters have become clogged over the years. Its only after the oil warms up and thins out does it allow oil to "pump up" the lifters. That's why it goes quiet after 5 min. There are several different brands of additives on the market that can fix this problem ,unless you have a more serious mechanical problem, which I doubt.Check your local auto parts store for the additive. Just add it to your oil and "wham!" problem solved. Good Luck!

It is not the CV joints had those checked out. The transfere case still shifts from
2HI to 4HI to 4LO all works fine.
Also had wheel bearings checked. It is not a consistant issue only does it sometimes and cannot duplicate it or make it do it. Very frustrating thing. might go 100 or more miles inbetween then might go 1/10 mile? UGH!!
Ok I have done some looking could it be the 4WD transfer case encoder motor position sensor? Where is it at and what does it do?
