Volvo 850 tight engine - injectors + oil leak from top of cam cover

I have just bought a 1996 volvo 850 tdi estate. This is my second and sold a 240k mile example for a 132k mile one. Typical but my old higher mileage car runs better. The problem with the 'new' one is that is won't start in very cold weather if left for several days (advised it could be air leaking into the fuel system). I took the plastic engine cover off and there is oil on the cam cover below the circular plastic breather??? pipe. Also, the engine feels tight and flat at peak revs, pulls well but just doesn't feel as loose or free reving as my higher mileage example. Any ideas on the mix of issues. I hope it's not the injector seals.

Could be from
bad injectors
air in fuel
leakdown from problem pressure regulator valve
glo-plugs not operating
pump not producing the desired pressure
at this point I suspect that injectors/ pump need reconditioning as the unit is 21 years old probably never having either serviced
take it to an accredited diesel specialist shop for a proper diagnosis and quote

SOURCE: 98 Volvo V70 Turbo engine oil leak

It may be the gromet for the PCV valve or it could be the spark plug rubber seal located in the valve cover if it is the type of engine that has the wires and spark plugs that go down through the valve cover, if this is the case buy a valve cover gasket with the rubber gromets that are located around the base of the hole where spark plugs fit through and install.

SOURCE: Volvo wont' start

My Volvo 850 1996 (10-valve, 2435 cc) always starts first time, but is inclined to cut out at some stage in the first 2 to 4 miles, especially in slow-moving traffic. It is then impossible to start: you have to leave it for an hour, and then it's perfect. The problem also arises if you drive the car for 2 to 4 miles and then switch off (e g to go in and buy your newspaper). Attempting to re-start with the throttle to the floor makes no difference. Any advice ? (Ronan, in Dublin)

I'm looking for a timing cam cover for a 1996 Volvo 960

Hi there well here's a link to get the parts = http://www.swedishautoparts.com/960/Volvo-960-engine-gaskets-&-seals.html .The oil pan does not have a gasket, it uses the same sealant/glue as the head top. Are you sure you have a leak at those seams? Oil can migrate and be actually from a different source. Oil filler gasket, cam seals, oil cooler orings, oil separator hoses and housing are typical leakers.

And there is no way to avoid messing with the cams, removing the head top frees up the cams. But no special tools are required, it just makes the job simpler and quicker, something a dealer would invest in if they are going to do several heads on this model.

Use the Volvo sealant/glue, it is easy to work with and is worth the extra cost, also it is orange in color and makes it easy to view when applying. Cleaning the old material off is going to be the hardest and dirtiest part of the job. It is tedious and one has to exercise great caution to not scratch the mating surfaces, so using plastic scrapers or some hard wood, I have used chop sticks. If it does look like you need to do the oil pan, that is going to be a real pain, but also order the seals for the oil pick up tube, might as well renew those while the oil pan is off.

Good luck

Just purchased a 96 volvo 850 took it for an oil change. after the oil change the car overheated and thought it was the reservoir cap. but the pressure is just to much and even the new cap leaks wat

Hi
Look for a leak in the cooling system. If your radiator or cylinder head seem to be compromised, or if you open the coolant reservoir and the levels are topped up, you may have a leak in the cooling system. If you're experienced with cars, check the radiator, core plugs in the engine block, or cylinder head near the head gasket for any signs of leakage.
  • If you don't know your way around cars, consider bringing your car to the nearest mechanic and ask them to pressure-test the cooling system. Pressure-testing the cooling system is relatively easy to do; you may even get it free of charge.

Oil leaking from top of engine

The oil could be leaking from the rocket cover. The rocker cover bolts may need tightening or the rocket cover gasket needs replacing.

Engin oil leaking past distributer base plate

There is a seal between dist and engine. If distributor is properly tightened and still leaking, replace the seal. Get a manual ...if you do this incorrectly, you will alter ignition timing.
