My GMC's speedometer stopped working, then started working again. Now it does not work at all. The odometer still works. Does anybody have any ideas on how to resolve this?
This issue is caused by faulty motors inside your Envoy instrument cluster and can only be repair by taking out the instrument cluster and replacing the motors which requires de-soldering and soldering tools and the correct replacement parts.
I repair Envoy instrument clusters for a very reasonable amount and have a free 12 Year Guarantee on my work, you can see my site at www.DrSpeedometer.com
A couple of days ago our 2004 Envoy speedometer stuck on 50mph, and would not go down but would go up...tried the advice above for turning on the ignition (without starting) and putting in gear (may have to push on break). Nothing changed until I turned off the ignition, then the needle went down...but not to zero. So, I kept turning on and off, until the needle went down to zero. (btw, each time I turned off the ignition, a 'shhhh' sound was made, like pressure releasing or air escaping or something like that.) Lo and behold it's no longer stuck and seems to be working correctly! Saved us some money! Thank you, thank you!!

have the same problem with my 2004 envoy xuv
04 GMC Envoy with speedo bouncing between 70 and 120+ MPH. My GMC Dealer says, yes it's a known problem, bulletins filed, but my VIN is not on the list or in the range. Blah, blah, blah. I'm seeing lots of chatter on the subject.

solutions suggested on-line:
I have a 2004 Tahoe had the same problem. I put ignition on but not started and put it in reverse turned the key to start (will not start because not in park) until speedo resests to zero. It fixed mine. [Didn't work on mine.]

Here is what both the number I got from GMC guy [800-462-8782 and the site he told me about www.speedometersettlement.com site says:
"SPEEDOMETER SETTLEMENT NOTICE
The court granted approval of the settlement and entered judgment on November 7, 2008. However, two separate appeals have been filed which seek to challenge the court’s approval of the settlement. The settlement will not become effective unless and until all such challenges have been resolved and the judgment has been upheld.
Please check back to this site or call our toll-free number (866) 514-0405 after February 20, 2009, to determine the status of the appeals and whether the settlement has become effective.
Thank you."
Which all means nothing!!!
I have had the same problem with my 04 GMC Envoy, since December of 2006. I have dealt with it for over 2 years as originally my warantee was active but the dealership said it was not a warrantee item to fix. This is very fustrating to read and see that soo many other people and cars have had the same problem.
Same exact problem. Any ideas.
I have just recently (as in just last night during a long drive from Jacksonville, FL to Atlanta, GA) run into the same problem. According to my GPS, I was doing around 65 mph but the speedometer showed my speed around 115 mph! This is the first time that I have heard of this and was quite surprised at the number of people that have experienced the same problem! I just took my 04 Envoy to the dealership this morning and because my warranty had just ran out (I was over by 8k miles) I had to pay for everything going forward. According to the GMC service department, I would need to replace the ENTIRE instrument panel in order for this problem to be fixed and it was going to cost me almost $500!!! I don't have that kind of money readily available so I had them put my everything back together and told them that I'll get back with them on it. Well, to my surprise as I drove off and looked at my speedometer, the darn thing is working fine now... at least according to my GPS it is showing the same speed give or take one/two mph.

I am having the same issue with the speedometer on my 2004 Envoy XUV. First, it was the fuel gauge, then it "fixed" itself. Now it's the speedometer... Going 70mph, and it says I'm going 110mph. The dealer gave me the same song and dance. They charged me $90 to tell me "The entire board needs to be replaced... $400!!"
I'd be curious to know if anyone has found a fix for this problem...??
i have a 2005 envoy and it did begin with the fuel and then the speedometer. i got a quote for $500.00 to fix. what should i do?
same issue speedo works some times and other times not
We have the same problem. Has anyone found a solution? Should this be a recall item?
