Interior Lights stay on and insturment pannel has a mesage that the gate door is open when infact it is closed and secure.
The switch in on the latch itself. When the striker goes into the latch it also trigger the small micro switch.
You can try something like WD40 and spray liberally into the latch and open close it 10 times or so to see if it frees it up.

Check all the fuses under the hood and under the dash. Then try having someone wiggle the liftgate while you "tap" the down button repeatedly. Do not apply too much force to the liftgate.
