Resetb the timing belt. Could be a tooth out.

  • samuel Jan 27, 2013

if problem is timing belt that car won't start, but the car will drive for almost 30 mins when engine gets hot it will shut off while driving and won't start only cranking but will start the following day and drive for 30 mins. and shut off again.

  • samuel Jan 28, 2013

Thanks, the car has no ignition module but rather a coil pack no prblem like electronic issue untill the timing belt was changed then all this problem arises. Could it be the crank sensor damage due to over heating?

If this vehicle has a stand alone ignition module, that is more than likely the culprit. Change the igntion module and the problem should go away.

The car has a coil pack and had been changed

If the coil pack sits on top of the ignition module and only the coils packs were changed, it will still do the same thing until the ignition module is changed as well. If the ignition module is located totally separate from the coil pack it needs to be located and still changed. Unless the coil packs and ignition module are built together, the coil pack change alone will not take care of the issue. Get a service manual and see where the ignition module is located. Most of the time when you can drive for a while and then it shuts off and starts later, its failing electronic like the crank sensor or ignition module that is at fault whenit gets hot. The next time that it fails to start, take off the intake boot just in front of the throttle body and spray 2-3 seconds of starter fluid into the throttle body(with it open), close the throttle body and attempt to start it. If it does try to start or runs for a few seconds then that rules out the cam position sensor and the ignition module. If it does not run or attempt to start after spraying it with starter fluid, it is still an electronic issue.

SOURCE: Is there a timing belt or chain in a 2004 Subaru

The 2.5L engine has a timing belt and it should be replaced at 105K. The 3.0L engines have a timing chain and are not serviced regularly.

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

SOURCE: 2000 subaru outback trunck won't unlock/open

Is it a lift back or window and tail gate? Either way, there is a little hole on the inside for the escape hatch. Take a small pin, wire, coat hanger, push it straight in, it should pop the window, door, whichever, might be a small button over the hole, that way you can get the door lock fixed without smashing the lock off. I never tried mine , but I know all cars have them now. Check it out.

Cam shaft sensor code p0340 replaced still no start

You will get a cam shaft code if the timing belt is broken. This could be you issue. I would check the timing belt before you go any further.
It can damage your engine if you keep trying to start it.

Pulled upto red light car stopped. It will turn over but want start. Checked coil checks ok. What can I do next.

run fault codes to check for cam/crank position sensor problems . Check that the cam shaft is turning over as it may be a broken timing belt.

I'm trying to adjust the timing on the subaru 1997 outback legacy 2.5 engine and it seems to not be correct.

The ignition timing is not adjustable. It is computer controlled by the crank sensor, cam sensor and knock sensor. Would be easier to help you if I knew why you were trying to adjust it. Have a great day.
