Have you Checked the Fuel Filter and Pump????

  • Anonymous Jan 27, 2009

Well..........The only other thing that I can think of would be, Maybe you have a Bad Common Ground Somewhere other than the Battery Cables. This would Drain the Battery. You have replaced everything else that could be wrong!

  • Anonymous Jan 27, 2009

There is one Under the Dash for the Electronics, The Stater has a Common Ground. The Fuel Pump is Grounded, Sometimes there is a Motor Common Ground Wire Woven Cable Underneath that Grounds to the Bottom. This is really a Trial and Error Prob. I wish that You were Closer to me so that I could Bring the Equipment to you and Check it all. That would make it a Lot Easier.

I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee Limited this is giving me fits with the charging system. I've replaced the battery twice in the past 3 months. I've also installed a factory rebuilt alternator. I can drive...

Alternators have a built in regulator that tells them when to turn on and off. Just because the alternator is working, does not mean the regulator is turning it on and off when it should, in turn, over charging or undercharging your battery ruining it. The problem is you could also have a short somewhere that is draining the battery when it gets damp. The starter or a bad battery cable is usually the culprit here. A bad battery cable can mimic a dead battery, and when you jump it you put enough power to allow it to "jump" the bad spot, But also put a major strain on the cars electronics. So start with new cables, a 96 is 15 years old. Inspect the starter for any sign of corrosion or other damage at the same time. If this doesn't help, demand a replacement alternator. 98% of rebuilds are good, but 2% aren't.

ON MY 94 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE the new alternator is not charging batt and when you take off positive cable it shut s the motor down . . .i thought it was supposed to srtay running

Wow. No, you need both cables on the battery for the vehicle to tun, and taking a cable off while it is running is potentially dangerous to you and to the vehicle. You can damage the computer and certain electronic components by doing that, including the alternator.

How do you know the alternator is not working? Did you measure voltage at the battery with the vehicle off and the with the vehicle running? The difference should be a volt or two, dependeing on the ambient temperature and condition of the battery.

Battery Drain

It sounds like an Alternator problem.
Remember the Battery only Starts the vehicle and runs nominal operations. The Alternator actually provides the electricity to run the Engine operations. With that being said: Start the vehicle, jump start it if you have to. Remove the Negative Cable from the Battery or remove the jumper cables. If the Engine dies after doing this, the Alternaotr is bad and needs to be replaced. When the Alternator begins to die, it starts draining the Battery. During normal operation it is the Alternator that sends a small trickle charge back to the Battery keeping it charged-up.

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont hold a charge and needs to be jumped. When trying to start it makes a clicking noise and the console instruments jump. Is this the battery??? Or the alternator?? Or...

First remove and clean battery cables and battery posts with a wire brush or sand paper. Make sure battery is charged and check to see if it starts. Then check battery condition and charging system. The problem could be cables, battery, or alternator. Check them in order and repair or replace as needed. Check cables, battery, belts(tension and condition), and charging system in order. Do this because bad cables will give false readings for other tests and so on.

Wont turn over but when i jump it it starts then

bad cell in the battery won't hold the charge, also check alternator, once the engine is running the alternator should keep it running even with a bad battery, chances are the fouled alternator caused your battery to fail also

94 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start

Sounds like the inline fuse popped. It is located in the wire that comes from the alternator to the battery. The alternator is sending out the juice, but it can't make it to the battery. I sincerely hope that this gets you on the road again. Best wishes and God Bless.

Sounds like the alternator is bad. Start the truck, and while it is running, you can test the incoming voltage with a multimeter. If you do not have a multimeter you can remove the negative terminal. If the truck quits, you need a new alternator. If it keeps running with the terminal disconnected your alternator is fine. But if you replaced the battery and the cables, then I would be pretty sure that the alternator is bad.
