Remove the thermostat from the engine. You will need a thermometer or some other device to read water temp. hang the thermostat in a pot (Placing the flange at water level) and place on the stove or some heating device. bring the water to the boil while watching the thermostat. As the water temp approaches 80-85c you will see the center of the thermo start to open. As the water approaches the boil thye thermo should be fully open. Check you readings (start to open and full open) with the specs stamped into the body of the thermostat. If they are the same the unit is ok. If it opens too hot or dosen't fully open buy a new one . If It is fully open when cold buy a new one.

The only thing i could figure it was after checking the "easy" things was the head gasket. tore it down this morning and sure enough that was the problem. now that i have it a part i am going to do a complete rebuild on it, then it will last me for a while longer and i won't have to worry to much about it.
thanks

How do you replace 2001 dodge caravan heater switch?

To replace a thermostat in a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan, look at the engine. Should be located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose in removable housing. Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from radiator Remove housing - make note how thermostat is installed Clean both surfaces Install new thermostat and gasket Re-fill coolant slowly to prevent an "air lock" Start engine check for leaks Run engine to normal operating temperature with heater on Check coolant level.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dodge grand Caravan 1995 has been acting up with erratic heating since last month.

Could possibly need a new thermostat, the thermostat opens and closes depending on the heat of the coolant. maybe also check your heating core. as well as the quality of you coolant.

98 dodge caravan overheating...heater works..checked fans they came on later but when I drove it after it cooled down and it overheated...check engine lite came on.

About the only things are the thermostat and the water pump. There could be something with the radiator but that is the rarest because the water shoots straight through. If it overheats fairly rapid,it's most likely the thermostat.Sometimes a water pump will let you go 20-30 miles before overheat. The thermostat is cheaper and easier if you're going to try it systematically.Overheat will probably cause the check engine light too.Good luck! I have a 2006 dodge grand caravan, when the car is in driveway idling the car wont heat up but as soon as you start driving the car, the car heats up normally. Should i replace the thermostat or is it...

The reason for replacing the thermostat is improper cooling - not heating. The purpose of the thermostat is to shut off the flow of coolant through the engine allowing the temperature to build. When it reaches the temperature it wants the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow to maintain the proper temp. Dodge Caravans have a track record for maintaining a low temperature until the engine is at higher rpm. While it is inconvenient in cold weather it it not bad. However, you want to check that your radiator fan is shutting off when it is cold. A fan that is staying on when it shouldn't could cause the temp to stay cooler.
