The steering almost locked on my 2002 Chevy Tahoe. Repair shop said it needed a new gear box. The repair was made and one month later there is a very loud noise in the steering column when the car is started. The noise is not so loud at a higher speed. What is the problem? It almost sounds like a belt but I don't think there is a belt in the gear box?
Believe it or not there are some problems you should take to the dealer. It never was the gear box, its a defective steering column bushing. That problem had a factory notice and the dealer would have diagnosed it immediately an fixed it free parts +$40.install. Tahoes get that problem.
No there are no belts in the box....However the power steering pump reservoir could be low on fluid which will cause this noise or else the pump is going out or the belt is bad that runs the pump....check fluid first and belt wear.....If your box went bad it will cause a pump to wear out.....Just because you repaired the box dosent mean your pump will be ok because when your box went bad it made the pump work overtime.....which damaged it....But it may just be a power steering belt or low fluid.....check for leaks also....You may need to take back to repair shop If they screwed up.....Hope this helps.......Metalpoet

i would take vehicle back to repair shop. it sounds like if they replaced the gear box they may have made an improper adjustment on the steering linkage to the gear box. and everytime you start it the power steering pump sends fluid to the gear box comes a popping noise. or there is something loose on the gear box. and no there is no belt on the gear box, but yes on the power steering pump. keep me posted

Dealer, but did you check the Power steering fluid level??or any leaks. There are two hose that connect to the gear box from the power steering pump. if the pump is low on fluid you lose your power steering, if the hose has a leak or it blew and lost the power steering fluid then you lost your power steering again.
Check the fluid level to the power steering pump and any leaks or broken hose to the gear box.
