To shift from "P" to "R", there is a swicth that allows the shift button on the shift lever to be depressed. For this switch to work, the ingnition switch must be "ON" and the brake pedal depressed. If all yor brake lights went out (or if your brake switch on the pedal fails to work), then the shift switch wont work and you can not shift out of "P".

I might have the answer for you.
I had a similar problem with a Ford, in this case a Mercury.
The mechanism inside the steering column wore out, and caused this very thing.
Because of it's age, I chose not the purchase a new steering column, but I think it was not available anyway.
I installed a used one out of a salvage yard that was not worn out. God bless your efforts.

I can go in reverse but not in drive

Takes two people. Block the wheels, climb under the car and check the linkage.

When you experience this problem, check to see if your brake lights are coming on. It could be as simple as a brake light switch malfunction. If the brake lights are functioning as the problem is occurring then you could for example have a problem with the shift interlock solenoid.

Transmission won't come out of reverse

your Transmission is controlled by a cable on the mustang. it could have Came off of the transmission. it just snaps on to a lever on the transmission. or the cable broke. other wise it came unhooked from your shifter.
