Check to see if you have a lot of dirt in the throttle body. Clean the throttle blades out with brake cleaner or throttle body cleaner. You'll see alot of dirt come out. Keep spraying until it comes out fairly clear and wipe the throttle body out with a rag. If this doesn't do it, you may have a problem with the throttle position sensor (TPS). This sensor controls the idle after the car warms up and keeps it from dying when you brake or sit at idle.

SOURCE: I have a 1993 buick regal custom with 3.8 V6 fault codes

Idle position switch or sensor. I had 93 that would stall when i came to a stop. Cost me $43 but it was worth it. I don't know if this will fix it, but it sounds like it would.

SOURCE: Buick Regal dying

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.

Make sure that the idle motor is working. When you start it should run about 1200 rpm for a few seconds then go down to 600 rpm If not it may need cleaned or replaced.

Engine idles ruff and dies out! Why!

It could be many different things.I would start with checking the fuel pressure it should be 41-47 psi with key on engine off.If its not within the specs replace fuel pump.

Car Dies

My car idled OK but not great and used to die during stops at times. I replaced the spark plugs and wires without a difference. Shortly after the car died with very little power, just enough to limp home. I had a shop fix it so I didn't guess what was wrong. They replaced the Ignition Module and some of the Coil Packs. They had to replace the Spark Plugs I just put in due to fouling. If you are smelling gas you are putting your cat at risk and might have a more expensive problem later. It cost me $500 but it runs better than ever.
