From your description, you probably have a few broken teeth on your flywheel. A way to confirm this is to place the transmission in gear, release the brake and rock the truck back and forth a Little. Take it back out of gear and try it again. If the starter engages, it has confirmed my suspicion. This is the most common finding for the symptom you have described. I have rarely run across a started drive gear failure on a Nissan product, bar none, since 1968 until now! IF, however the test I have given you has not resolved the problem, this means that the solenoid has not kicked the starter drive gear out far enough, the drive gear it self has failed or the starter is loose causing the drive gear to be too far from the flywheel teeth to contact. The latter is a 1 a 100,000 shot!

starter silent and dead. or clicks or chatters only but crank shaft does not spin on front of the engine, cranked.

for any car to start the starter motor just spin the engines crank shaft, heard and seen to spin is best.
if starter is dead,
battery lugs rusty, clean them .
battery is dead, or is dead because bad or altenrator(gen) IS DEAD.
if starter does work what is next ,in order
all fuses good
IMMoblizer lamp in cluster blinking and angry as the users manual told you. this must be cured nw.
the engine must be good (compression
spark must be good 1.6L all cylinders not just 1.
and fueling is last, check fuses, again and bad fuel pump relay.

Car was shut off. Minutes later, when attempting to start, the engine cranked freely. Won't start. Not sure where to start looking for problems.

Sounds like a timing chain problem, you could check compression but I think your going to have to take it to a shop regardless. Make sure that the engine is turning over and it's just not the starter spinning that your hearing.

Starter/Electrical Issue

It sounds like a bad starter. You can have the starter tested at a place such as Auto Zone or Advance Auto, but it needs to be taken off the vehicle.

If your engine dosen`t even crank you have to first make sure the battery is fully charged. If so it sounds like it is your starter. When your starter goes bad your engine wont crank you get nothing when you turn the key.Try to start there.

My 2000 nissan maxim starts up sometimes at other times when trying to crank it it sounds like it is out of timing

Why do you think that the engine spinning over and over is a symptom of the timing being wrong? It isn't unless the engine never starts or kicks back while cranking it with the starter. Check your fuel pressure when this all happens. It sounds like the electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank is failing, they last about 100,000-125,000 miles on average.
