My 2000 BMW 523 ignition key will insert but will not turn.
I hate asking but..is it the right key? if it is ignition cylinder is bad

Insert key grab screwdriver tap the end of the key a few times with the blunt end of the screwdriver. Don't crush it just tap it. There are spring tumblers that are not going back to there home. I had the same problem and this worked for me. Also check the key against any other keys you might have it's possible the key is worn.

When a gauge goes bad, you have to decide if it is the sending unit or the gauge itself. If you unplug and short the wire to the sending unit, the gauge should go to max (one way or the other), and the opposite when the wire is not connected to anything. If that works, then it is probably the sending unit. If that does not work, it is probably the gauge itself.

had this problem myself recently and i had to remove steering wheel and side covers remove shear bolts from lock housing using a smal chisel that lets you lake of lock housing and steering lock to replace them your local bm dealer should be able to order the correct one to fit your key, your car will still run with key out but you have to insert it to start it.

Check the battery to make sure it is good,and fully charged,remove and clean the cable ends,and the battery post,side post that is,if they are glazed over with a grey,or black film,this acts as an insulator,so make sure they shine.
