Is it possible to buy new wiring for the port that allows the diagnostic codes to be read?

The check engine light n or reduced power light comes on when the on-board computer detects a fault in engine driveability or performance, transmission control system or transmission, or the emissions system, and a fault code is set and stored in the computer. Faults that can set the check engine light can range from a vaccuum leak, engine mis-fire, low engine compression, faulty sensor such as O2 sensor or other engine sensor, hydraulic pressure loss in transmission, transmission shift solenoid, open/short in wiring harness, emission evaporative system leak, or one of over a hundred different reasons. The only way to know what set a fault code and turned the check engine light on is to have a diagnostic scanner hooked up to the on-board computer and read it for stored diagnostic fault codes. Many auto parts stores will do this service for free- (like auto zone)check with you local parts stores. If none in your area do, then you will have to take it to a shop and pay to have the computer read for stored fault codes. Without knowing the fault codes numbers, it would be irresponsible to guess as to the cause as there are hundreds of possible causes.

If the check engine light is on simply drive to your nearest auto parts store and they will perform a free diagnostic. The code can be read with a tool called an On Board Diagnostic Tool, OBD1, 2, or 3 for short. In my area I use Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Napa Auto Parts, and Advance Auto Parts. The connect port is located under the dash board near the steering column. The store will tell you what the code is that's causing you grief. All the best.......

Could be a few things. Most likely APP (accelerator pedal position) sensor. Take it to auto zone for a free diagnostic scan. They'll tell you for sure. If it's the APP sensor, rock auto (dot) com has the cheapest ones I've seen short of yankin one out of a salvage yard. About $70 shipped last time I checked. Could also be the ECU. That's bad. You're talking several hundred then instead of $70. Regardless, get the scan done at auto zone first to find the issue and get the code. If it's the app sensor, buy the thing and install it yourself. Simple as hell. Just disconnect the wiring harness running between the gas pedal and the under dash &remove the two bolts holding it down. Put the new one in place and reverse the removal process and you're done. The ECU is much more complicated. Too much to type here. You may be best off leaving that one (if that's what it is) to the pros, depending on your experience level. No matter what, I wouldn't recommend driving it (except to auto zone and back) because it can suddenly decrease your speed while driving, potentially causing an accident. Good luck!

If you are referring to a check engine code for a Detroit Diesel 60 series engine, there are several forum links that troubleshoot the bad code. 1 resolved code involved replacing wires to the ECM and replacing some bad batteries.

I TRIED ALL that TOO...

Finally my codes... said the OXYGEN SENSORS were complaining... OBD... DTC
(on-board-diagnostic... DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES)

So... of course I changed the... OXYGEN SENSORS.

The "NEW" OXYGEN SENSORS complained just as well...

I have subsequently learned the "SENSORS" are
just doing their job...

In my case reporting on a collapsed catalytic converter.
(muffler is actually a MORE common blockage).

A little hunting around... like Auto-Zone ... Napa auto...
Pep-boys... O'Reilly Auto Parts... even MIDAS might
yield FREE READINGs... (check around).

Just remember to wear your best SALES RESISTANCE...

No, you can't.obd2 requires a code reader to read the codes and you can't use the check engine light anymore.It is usually cheaper to buy one at walmart then to get someone to hook theirs up,check your options,you might want to buy one.

get the vehicle scanned for the trouble code most auto stores such as auto zone/advanced auto scan for free check ur local area the check engine comes on when the computer senses a problem or something is not reading right if u want when the code is read the store or mech can and usually do reset the computer

you can not jump wires on a 2002 model,only a code reader can read it for you.Auto zone can do this for you.
