Got to work, turned off ignition switch, engine kept running. Re-inserted key and turned switch off again, engine stopped running. Engine seems to be running fine but check engine light is on.

2001 MAzda MPV- Key was stuck in ignition. Would not turn all the way back to remove. I pulled the fuse for the Hazards and WHOLA!! Key turned back and could be removed.! Just to test the problem I put the key back in , started up , pulled up and back a few feet, turned the steering wheel and parked. Key was stuck again. I pulled the fuse and again ... WHOLA! key was released. Now what I need to do is fix the problem or I have to pull a fuse every time I stop the car - ANY ADVICE??
I was browsing unsolved problems. If you still have the problem, I'll try to help you. But it's going to be awhile trying to communicate back and forth. First...Check the engine for spark. Take off a plug wire and stick a screw driver in the wire end and place the metal part of the screw driver next to something on the van that's metal. Have someone crank it over for just a second or two and see if a small spark jumps from the screw driver to the metal part. I'll check back for your answer.
groan.....gunna need a bit more info. but i'll try. What portion of the ignition was ripped out? The tumbler + switch? If so, you might need to get the car's system resent to recognize that it has a new ignition put in. Sime vehicles have a theft prevention system in place to prevent the vehicle from running if its been hot wired. Your best bet would be to replace the damaged ignition components (You did not mention if you did or not). If it still doesn't work after you have replced all of the ignition components. You can try to reset the vehicle (doesn't work on all) disconnect negative battery terminal and go back into vehicle and press down the brake pedal for about 30 seconds then reconnect battery and try it....good luck, hope this helps
Step 2: Lock and unlock the drivers door using the power door lock switch on the door.
Step 3: Insert key into the ignition.
Step 4: Turn key to on position and return to off position. (IMPORTANT
- use ON position NOT ACC position). Do this 3 times within 10 seconds.
Leave key in the ignition.
Step 5: Open and close the drivers door 3 times. (Door should be left open after this step).
Step 6: ECU should respond by locking and unlocking the doors.
Step 7: Press any button on remote #1. ECU responds by locking and unlocking the car doors.
Step 8: Press any button on remote #2 (etc.) Each time the ECU will respond by locking & unlocking the doors.
Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition and the ECU will respond a
final time with a series of door locks and unlocks. You're done
It sound like you need a new starter. I am not not sure why they serviced the distributor, but you mentioned the engine doesn't turn over. The only other thing could be a bad neutral safety switch or ignition switch. Have someone check the "signal" wire to the starter for switched power( power when you turn the key to start position). If power is present, I'd replace the starter. If not, check Ign. switch or neutral safety switch. I hope this helps
The 2002, 2003 and 2004 Mazda MPV's all use the same Ford 6 cyl. 3.0 duratec engine. The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute of those years use the same engine. Therefore if you need an inexpensive engine repair manuel for your 2002 MPV, get the Haynes ($20.00) 2001-2007 Escape/Tribute manuel. Mazda sells the a MPV shop manuel for $180.00. I also own a 2002 Mazda MPV LX. 75k miles.
can you be a little more specific.
